    Fitting dual batteries

    Hi everyone,
I've got a defender 300tdi 130 and wanted to know some info about fitting dual batteries, i want the 2nd battery for my winch and a 40ltr fridge. Do you have to move all those relays under the seat and do you need to use smaller batteries?? Also which item do i need to buy off drivesafe sc40 or sc80??

    cheers knotty

Hi Dave you should run your winch off the main starter battery, as most of the time (read all of the time) the motor will be running when using the winch, and keep the second battery for the fridge.

Most Defender put the second battery under the front seat.

    Cheers Baz.

I'm in the process of doing the same, I got a dual battery kit at the 4WD show when in Melbourne. For batteries I'm replacing the N70ZZ that I presently have under the seat with 2 CAT 825CCA Starting/100Ah Deep Cycle dual-purpose batteries. These will fit under the passenger seat along with the battery kit. I will run the winch off the main battery and the radio, accessories, fridge etc of the aux.

You can argue all you like about the choice of batteries, but they are reasonably priced (1/3 of an Orbital) and come with a 5 year warranty, they are also maintenance free and sealed so less chance of a leak.

There's kits mentioned on the Forum (Traxide) that look OK then there is also ARB, TJM, Piranha and many others... I got an Autron which seemed good for the price. I've had Piranha and ARB kits before but they were more expensive. Most of them do the job the main difference is what they come with (leads, fittings, terminals etc). As this all increases the price if you have to also buy the rest of the stuff.

Hi folks, if you what to contribute to it, because of the numerous enquiries I have received, which have intensified over the last month or so, I have just start a new project about installing a dual battery set up in a Defender and it will easily work with any vehicle, so please go to the link and put your 2 cents worth in.

    Cheers.
