    Sluggish Disco

    Hi All
Our disco is not performing the way it use to it is a TD5 lowdown the motor seems OK mid range OK but at high revs it feels like it is hesitating or running out of fuel a bit disconcerting when overtaking as there is not a dealer within 200 klms of here to test it with a test book i am looking for some advise on what it could be.
    Regards

    Id check

    fuel filter
    air filter.
intake flex hose to turbo collapsing
    supply volts to fuel pump
    fuel pressure

can it make full RPM in nuetral?

if not its possabley the throttle position sensor worn near the end of its travel.. one check is to disconnect it and multi meter it across its range with a really good meter set to logic, I cant remember weather the Td5 has a resistor type TPS or a step counter...but on logic the meter will give you the volts and a step count.

    Hi All
Dave thanks for the input I will try your suggestions either tomorrow or Friday
Fuel filter changed 10000 Klm's ago
Air filter changed at the same time
Intake hose I will check tomorrow
Supply volts to the fuel pump I will check also
Fuel pressure how do I check it
It seem to rev effortlessly in neutral
Throttle position sensor might be a little beyond my scope

put it in low range to and rev it in nuetral to bush check the TPS.

If you dont have a fuel pressure gauge (im guessing not) theres no real way for you to check the fuel pressure that is going to be reliable or accurate enough

If it was mine, I would..
    1. drain a little fluid from the fuel filter to ensure there's no water.
    2. check that the wastegate actuator rod is still attached to the wastegate.
    3. check the electrical plugs at the ecu to check that there is no oil.
    4. bypass the wastegate modulator by connecting a hose directly from the pickup after the turbo to the wastegate actuator then test drive to see if there's any difference - if not then suspect the wastegate modulator.
    5. remove the inlet manifold hose and engine cover and check that the egr valve is firmly closed.

After this, I'd suspect the fuel pump or something else, so head for somewhere that can read fault codes.

I'm assuming its not faultering badly at higher revs, or mid revs and high load. If it is, then maybe fuel cut-out is occuring due to excessive boost due to either the boost modulator or boost actuator has failed.

    Good hunting.

    Td5

Disconnect the wastegate actuator and check that the wastegate is moving freely and closing properly. We have had a couple that were not closing properly.

I'd Agree with my namesake here, I've just done the same on a defender. sluggish, wouldn;t rev under load, fine in neutral though. The actuator in this case wasn't able to move the wastegate at all, and the engine management codes were all concerned with incorrect MAP sensor readings and overboost was the cause. Disconnected the rod and spent 15minutes with a can of Wurth 'Rost off ice' to free up the wastegate. Perfect.

    Hi All
Finally got around to looking at the Disco first thing i checked was the inlet hose to the turbo all OK No 2 was the injector loom and it is full of oil so looks like we might have found the problem. Now is there a better quality loom available than the original and where do i get it from.

    lots of good "recovery" stories,
its NOT the end of the world, or for that matter, the loom,

maybe try a quick search first??
