    D1 Starting problems

A friends manual 96 Tdi D1 has an intermittent starting problem. It has central locking and (he thinks) a standard factory engine immobiliser. Door opens OK with key remote, puts key into ignition and dash lights up, but nothing happens when he turns the key to start (no solenoid clicking, no starter motor whir, nothing). Has been doing it intermittently for a year or so (maybe once a month). If he lets it sit for 10 minutes or so it starts immediately. It has new batteries. Is this likely to be related to the immobiliser, is it a common occurrence and how does he fix it?

It's possible the problem is related to the immobiliser but I'd be doing some tests before diving in & bypassing that.

Is there power getting to the starter motor solenoid ?
Are the engine earths clean & tight ?

If everything checks out OK, then you can bypass the immobiliser (alarm spider). Land Rover actually make a bypass that plugs straight in & isn't all that expensive. The spider is in a tight spot though so it's not a 5 min job.

We had the same prob....I just took starter motor off, had our local Auto sparky clean it up.....he found the Solenoid was full of crap, now no issues at all now.

Im was mainly happening when very hot, I would turn off and even after about 1/2 hr still wouldent start, but all good now, it now even gives out that whirl sound after start up

Is it an automatic? They have the cut out which may be the problem, jiggle the wires on top of the transmission.

    Very interesting,
mines an auto with factory alarm and remote
I thought mine was possessed by demons, because it does the same , intermittently, well actually only twice, the last time was a few weeks ago when i was in bendigo,
a very cold night, i had unlocked it, (remote) and had been opening and closing the doors(seems to have something to do with it.) took 6 goes, that included arming and disarming a few times, to get the thing to finally click in, although i could hear a clicking sound like a relay, when i turned the key, but the starter never engaged.

seems to me that cool weather is the culprit, but what it affects, i wouldn;t have a clue,I found the article on the alarm spider, i think the bogmaster wrote it. But its too much fiddling for my liking.

Oops forgot to mention that clicking sound appeared to come from under the dash near my feet. Well on the drivers side anyway

Maybe your mates car does the same, you didn't say if it was hot or cold when it did it.
