    D2 rear springs to front?

    Hi all
I recently had some heavier duty rear springs put into the rear of my 2001 Disco TD5 (Lovells RRR4). They seem to be fine and have only raised the rear slightly, approx 15-20mm. When combined with the Polyairs they are perfect for what I want. Of course I now have the original (purple) LR rear springs sitting around unused. I have heard of others replacing the original Discovery front springs with the standard rears but am unsure how this affects both the height of the front suspension and the comfort of the ride. My vehicle has a LR bull bar at the front and so is down slightly from standard height. A minor raise at the front could therefore be tolerated. If I was to transfer the unused rear springs to the front what's the collective wisdom on the affect of the front suspension height and ride?

    Cheers

    Hi Russell,

If you have a winch in the bar, and the bar is steel, then yes, I would try the purples. But no winch and I'd go the red ones from LRA, they are 180psi and 16.3" free length, whereas the purples are 220 psi and 17". This will give you approx 30mm lift at the front with no bar,(from standard) and about 20mm with. therewill obviously be a lot more of a difference considering your springs are sagged.
I use their springs myself and I sell them, and find them excellent.

These are LR purples though, not LRA purples. AFAIK they are about 250lb/in and from what I understand they will give about 2" lift. They'll be stiff though, and I don't know of anybody that has done this on a D2.

The other thing you will have to do is change over the lower spring perch on the front of the D2 to a D2 rear type as they are designed differently to prevent the spring rotating in the perch, whereas the rears are ground flat and so wont seat in the factory front perch properly.

    Gday
I will be getting rid of some OME779 front springs very shortly if your interested, these are supposed to give around 50mm of lift, at the moment with my steel bullbar its more like 25-35mm of lift. Let me know if your interested.

I don't think they will work very well on the front as the spring is already so close to binding at full compression. You'd also have to get rid of the rubber isolator. I wouldn't run the spacers on the bottom either as it'll make the spring bind on the chassis when articulating.

The original rears in my D2 are progressive. I suspect that they wouldn't be too good in the front.

It would be good for a laugh, but I wouldn't want to drive around in it. There different rates for a reason

If you are referring to the ProComp type rubber spacers, I have tried these in both the front and rear of a D2. They do isolate the body to a degree and increase the ride height but I found that they tended to get ripped by the springs and due to the back shocks topping out, I removed them again.

Without putting in longer shocks and lengthening the Brake lines, I would not recommend this setup. BTW, the spacers from Procomp are 35mm spacers that are used in 80 series Land Cruisers - Now, 20mm spacers If they did not tear) could be an interesting option.

One other thing that should be noted is that spacers compress the springs abnormally and shorten the life of the springs - my ride height has dropped significantly from the original spec.
