    Yet another Dunb Tyre Question

I have a D2, with 18" wheels, and pretty standard 255/55 R18's .......and I was looking at getting some 'chunky tyres' to pop on for off road stff.

I don't want to raise the suspension, I don;t want to cut gaurds.....I just was a off road tyre that will make it a bit more fun

I would look for a set of standard steel rims 16" and get a set of good tyres fitted save scratching your mags, thats what I've done.

I think you will find your choices somewhat limited in the 18" category - Have a look at the BFG and Goodyear websites to determine what the options are.

If your budget can deal with it, get a second hand set of 16" alloys from a D2 or Range Rover and stick a set of aggressive rubber on them. The only downside is that you need to change the wheels when you want to go off road.

Size wise, you can go to 265/75R16 (with minor rubbing) if you have a Bull Bar (if not, don't even try) This will put your speedo out by about 10% but there are correction devices available. 245/75R16 will give you around 5% speedo area and can be safely used with non bar equipped vehicles and will not rub anywhere.

Okay, If I get a set of 16" - anybody have any idea what is the idea size of 'chunky' off-road tyres I can fit on them without mods.

The D2 is bog standard - no lift, no bull bar etc.,

I don't mind having to swap them over when I plan a trip

Coopers make an R18 tyre, expensive though. I don't know if your standard front bumper would survive the rubbing from much bigger tyres in an offroad situation

Yep, Chop the front bar and go the 265s, because as soon as you fit some decent tyres you will want to push the car a little harder and the front bar is a gauranted casualty.

I broke mine within a week or 2 of getting my D2, still running my 18in road tyres and doing very tame stuff, they are way to low for offroading, but with a quick meeting with my friend Mr Angle Grinder, the front bar had a new look and a **** load more clearance, have a look at some pics of Dobbos front bar now - he had the same issue
