Thread: OK so it's a cracked head

So what caused that? An hydraulic with fuel obviuosly is injectors. But how did it get in the sump? Past the rings?

The fuel actually runs through the head, so a crack can allow it to mix with the oil, or in some cases to leak directly into the combustion chamber.

I wonder if it would be cheaper in the long run to retro fit a 300Tdi ?

I've had a Tdi, wouldn't trust one as far as I could throw it.

Anyhow, engine conversions usually cost a lot more than you think once all the modifications are taken into account.

I've come to the conclusion that in the long run you just have to budget for major repairs every few years.

What went wrong with your 300Tdi?

I thought the 300Tdi are very reliable.

Mine certainly is. Only major expense was the timing belt mod a couple of years ago...

Mine was actually a 200Tdi (which were supposed to be more robust )

I'm probably being a bit unfair on it, only had two major problems.

The injector pump fell apart on the inside and the main pulley bolt came loose which resulted in the end of the crankshaft being chewed off.

That vehicle also gave me experience with the gearbox mainshaft failure and a broken CV joint.

Have you thought about not owning a car? mind you with your luck the public transport would break down everywhere you went

if you need any help with UK purchases then i stilll have lots of friends and bank accounts over there! (hard to lose friends in 12 weeks when you have just moved to a hot country!)

your right tho... shipping plus the cost of a new head shouldnt be that much.. not compared to what you were quoted... and if you do talk nicely to the sellers (or retailers) they may put the value of goods as $1500 but still keep the insurance at the retail cost to cover you for the worst case..
