At the onset of panting, respiration rate increases rather suddenly from around 30-40 respirations per minute to around 300-400 respirations per minute. Under a moderate heat load a dog alternates between brief periods of panting at high frequencies and periods of normal slow respiration.

That is it in a nutshell.

    1. It is no longer thought to be the primary method of cooling. Recent Paralysis Tick research actually revealed how much heat dogs lose from their extremities through arterioles (or can gain), it is now thought this is the primary method of temperature control. You will note they will often lick their legs, or climb into their water bowl when hot.

    2. You first said A/C caused dehydration, but you have now correctly outlined the major source of dehydration - evaporative cooling via respiratory system. Alos evaporation of saliva/water from distal extremities.

My Dad has two German Shephards that come to work most days. The really long haired one spends a lot of time wet. Either from putting his front paws into his water bowl (which makes it either muddy or empty when the big oaf knocks it over), swimming in the dam or just laying in a muddy rain puddle.
His coat is about 3-4 inches long so I just let him as he must be bloody hot.

The other GS just spends her time chasing, chewing and defending any sticks she can get her paws on

As for the rear air con vents the ones in my D1 update cause more upset than joy. Generally when you have someone in the middle seat with no shoes on whinging about frozen feet.

Considering the price of D1 V8s these days, maybe you should just buy your dog his own Disco update?

Probably cheaper than the pipe and duct tape

Here is another suggestion, I tried it once in a falcon wagon( only because there rear vents were bigger) i was driving before we got rodeos.
sorry never got photos the end result will be a short l or a squared off s shape.
Get some pvc drainpipe , the rectangular stuff
bits you need are a straight length, and 2 90 deg sections
just make sure the holes on the 90 deg sections are the same size as the outlet at the rear of the console, or you could join two side by side,
    remove the end directional deflectors,
attach as best you can, screw or duct tape
the riser only needs to be as high as the top of the console
on the top of the riser put the other 90 deg,
you may have to trim and modify for direction, or put a small piece of ofcut in the centre so it pushes out air on the sides

now the hard part, you get hot while rover gets cool, set the vent control for floor , and pump out the air.

I know it works on a falcon.

I don't really quite follow what and where you suggest putting all this ducting.....problems are:
    - confined space for any ducting
    - ducts for rear vents are only about 30mm dia.

......but, these "problems" are also a blessing, as small size diameter allows you to actually fit some extra ducting or other "creative plumbing" in.........I'm thinking of putting in a tee join into ducts to 2 centre vents [which I usually adjust to 1/2 closed coz they're too cold and windy] and joining the rear vent ducts to here.

Actually.....THIS car Disco 1 [pre-update/""200" style/small headlights ] WAS bought to carry HIM around in .....to parks etc.......but its a great plaything too.!

I must confess though that fabric upholstery is bloody hard....IMPOSSIBLE actually.... to keep clear of short white Dalmatian hair! .....AND it tears easily from doggy nails! ......

......All in all, the leather-clad Range Rover is far better to keep clean, doesn't tear up ........and has better A/C cooling to rear seats!

FWIW when i play ball with our Kelpie, she periodically runs down to the canal, a quick wade through the water just up to her belly , then back to the game.

it obviously works for her ........but its all academic to the problem unless youre prepared to put a wading pool in the back of the Disco

That'd make refreshing change. A Land Rover that leaked water from inside to outside, instead of the other way around.

    just real quick..

I finally got the aircon in big red sorted.. all I had to do was run a pipe under the roof trim, down the side of the b piller, behind the passangers seat, beside the center box, across the front of the TX housing in front of the fuse panel and sit it in the passanger foot well where the aircon fan intake is.

Then put a small box with a fan in it to blow the air down the tube into the foot well.

Works a treat but for giggles Im going to put one down the otherside too.

now the back of Big red is cool enough to sleep in with the aircon on 2/2 instead of 3/3 with a 12v fan mounted on the passangers headrest to move it around.

Vaccume cleaner hose duct taped to the passenger side vent, over the A pillar roof lining and down the B pillar

    or

Ute the disco and chuck him on the tray

    P.S you've spoilt that dog
