Mate thats a great result, personally if they didnt quibble and took you at your word, will fix it free and have offered you a loaner they're giving you better treatment than Ive gotten at most (tonys exlcuded those guys were great to us) dealers...

ask to have an eyeball at the workshop floor and while on the floor ask if they mind you using their hoist for a quick underbody mark 1 check on the underside as a precursor to a trip your about to do..

the first is usually fine, the second most places will baulk at or say maybe so long as we have a mechanic with you for insurance/safety reasons..

The best result is "certainly sir, we will let you know the day your vehicle is fixed and arrange for it to be on the hoist for your inspection prior to you taking it for a test drive"

These 2 things in conjucntion with how friendly the owner/workers are are my barometer for how much ID trust em with.

It was the deciding factor between me going to a beaurepairs or the shop next door in wodonga (shocking memory i'll edit it in later) i needed a slow leak fixed was in a hurry and being lazy was prepared to pay for it... After getting a quote for the fix (both the same)

I asked if theyd mind if i was on the floor when the tyre was pulled so that I could eyeball the filter(RHR wheel), suspension bits and the disc, not only did they say yes, they offered me the use of a brake micrometer instead of having to use my own which was in the vehicle but they didnt know that.

Normally I seek out beaurepairs from a customer loyalty POV, not this time... I wasnt even going to be allowed to drive the vehicle into the workshop let alone be anywhere near it while it was on a jack.

On the positive side if they are that cooperative - maybe they are worth persevering with, and get them to learn a bit about Landrovers. But as blknight says - there is very little about Landrovers that requires any special knowledge - to a very large extent the "special knowledge" is either detail data that needs to be looked up anyway, or knowing what shortcuts you can get away with - and if you don't know these you shouldn't be taking them!

    TDI300's are not complicated engines.

Changing oil or greasing them certainly isn't.

You must have had some really bad experiences with mechs...

    Mine have been mainly positive.

Fix and a loaner and admitting fault sounds like a responsible and honest mechanic to me.

I wasn't actually thinking of 300 Tdi's.....I've had oil prime lost by 3 or 4 different mechanics in past 20 years doing simple oil changes on Rover V8's [either being too slow or not following recommended sequence of drain, refill, remove filter, replace preferably primed filter]...... failure to grease prop shaft splines.......not knowing or NOT believing that diffs and T case need drain and refilling every second oil change.....or not even knowing about checking and replacing oil in CV spheres....how to bleed coolant after drain and refill...all REALLY simple stuff - but you got to know about it!.......same as anything really!

    Power loss?

If the rubber hose from inter cooler is put on back to front it will crimp and slow air movement, also I once forgot to put the rubber hose back on after a belt change and it barely pulled in 5th gear...if you were only one "tooth" out on you timing the engine would make a racket, run really rough and in the extreme bend a valve.

A mechanic that is ready to admit fault without an argument is someone you usually can trust. Most places these days only admit their mistakes when you corner them.

That is a nice result - maybe we should know who this 'good guy' is.
