If i push mine hard up a long long hill towing camper i have hit 700, but mostly I've found that around town it rarely breaks 500. I have noticed that since I've been running BioDiesel the EGT seems to rise quicker and hotter.

    OK - variety!

So I have had quite a variety of responses, but it seems as though the range of 650-700 degrees on a long climb is about the mark?

It would seem that my initial fuel settings were hardly pushing the mark.

    So I have
    1. cranked up the smoke screw on the pump (spruce up that takeoff)
    2. turned the diaphraghm to 3:00
    3. cranked the star wheel down quarter of a turn

The disco pulls noticeably harder now, but I had the exhaust temp (pre turbo) over 500 pretty smartly just tooling around the suburban streets here (OK so 'tooling around' = thrashing it up to full boost quite a bit, but still not prolonged acceleration).

I will try a hill climb hopefully tomorrow and keep a sharp eye on the EGT. Nice to know I have a bit of scope to move around though.

Now if I can just get a hold of one of Jase's VGTs for the TDI, I will have a serious beast on my hands. Plus an intercooler upgrade wouldn't go astray.

    Owen.

when I first wound mine up I turned the diaghram 100* and exceeded 720* within 1.5km up a hill. It's now sitting at 60* from stock and I have to lift (slightly) or it will start to blast past 720* (my limit) after a couple of kays up the range.
Bear in mind I'm driving a big, heavy 130 usually loaded with gear.

you don't really need the hill just heel toe the brake and noisey pedal or hook up to something heavy/another vehicle that will engine brake behind you...

I should have stated that my 650 deg c was for post turbo (inside the pipe with the EGT sensor tip 1 inch from the turbine)

if you load up and try to pull a td5 (manual) engine braking in 3rd at 60 while you try to go in 4th thats a pretty good benchmark.

My 200 Tdi get to 650* up a hill fairly easily but then seems to stop.
On the highway at 100-110 it sits between 400-500*. Turning 33" tyres definately makes it work harder and use more fuel.

I've had the pump adjusted by AG Diesel and they seem to have got it about right, maybe a bit too much smoke at idle.

Using the EGT gauge is a good way to monitor your fuel use, I use about 1l/100km less after installation.

    Next adjustments

OK, after a drive in the hills I have now backed off the fuel pump settings. I had cranked the smoke screw in too far, got quite a bit of smoke on take-off, I have backed that off about 2/3 of a turn and seems OK now.

I turned the star wheel back to about +45 degrees (was +90), was getting some smoke at mid level boost with my foot all the way down

I turned the diaphragm back to about +45 degrees (was +90), was getting EGT racing up to 700 degrees (pre turbo) with a lot of boost on in the hills. I could probably have left it turned up (certainly pulls better), but I am worried about having to think about the EGT when all I want to be doing is to plant the foot and not worry about it.

Still driving well even at these settings. Thanks for advice all.

    Hi guys,
Can I ask what brand/model exhaust temp gauge people can recommend for this?

    Cheers,

    Thermoguard !

Ian does kits for 300Tdi's, including a drilled EGR blanking plate if you don't have a suitable BSP tap.

Who is Ian please? Couldn't make a lot of sense of the Thermogaurd website - didn't really seem to apply!
    Cheers,
