My back shelf (Defender 110), presented by me,

I have seen 101 different back designs for 4wds, having owned many, and made lots, I am starting to get the knack of it.

I am a professional scuba diver, either teaching or filming for tv / movies so I got the defender for is ability to carry a hell of alot, with very little effort. .. .. oh I also 4wd alot!

So I needed a rear area that could hold my scuba gear, camping gear etc, plus I sleep in my defender as well at times, so I had a brain wave.

I see alot of people using the back door as a table (with a fold down section) so seeing I am 6ft1, the length of the defender is to short for me with the seats in, so I thought I would be creative.

This is the final Product, it had to be raised 2 inchs due to my tanks being higher than the side steps.

Some nice marine carpet, and a safe spot to hold the fire extinguisher, I also added some tie down spots on both sides.

Other side has the same tie down spots as well as the power to the fridge, its setup so I use the side window to get into the fridge.

Here is the secret part.. the second slide of wood.

This second peice of wood, and go either out the back door area, or pushed to the front to make a full length bed in the defender (with out the back seats in) or just under a 5,5ft bed with the seats in and folded back.

The table is now out the back, its the full legth of the bottom, so it can extend a long way.

Thats about it... there is alot of things you can not see, like folding side steps so you can put the jack under the side wings, but still get at them from the front area if needed, a nice simple slide was created with U shape aluminium.... Nice flush handles on the bottom to make it easy to slide out... no rattles and made the defender alot quieter!

Anyway, hope this helps someone some day ...

If anyone wants any details, just ask.

Very neat, I like the idea of the table!! Have you put a stop or pin on it to stop it rattling or is it to snug a fit to bother?

I've got some OL ute tie down rails to go down the sides of the back, this will give me a variable mounting system. I've been holding off puting them in until I worked out a design for the back storage.

Nah I made it nice and snug, so it wont rattle, I will give it a year or two and see how it goes, after some nice corrugations!

my one issue with the whole lot being..

The location of the Fire extinguisher...

But im kinda pedantic about those.... Ive got 2 onboard, one at the rear door and one that floats (not litterally it gets moved depending on whats where in the vehicle at the time) around the front somewhere.

Plus its funny when you see the end result of one of the new ones (like the one in your pics) when it gets spiked and fills the cab with powder...

Hehe always wanted a white interior!, I have two others sitting within hands reach from the front seat..

The one in the back is nice and safe (I think) from puncture, it hides under the rail, anything sharp or unsafe sits under the tray anyway.
