with a turbo failure 99.9% of the time going over boost pressure limit isnt a problem as the waste gate valve deals with this, on the turbos we have at work that have failed only one caused over pressure the rest self disintergrated and caused lots of other problems or flogged themselves to death cutting the boost to effectively 0. Although there might be oil contamination of the unit that is worth worrying about.

The ACT dealer mechanic told me in November that they had a few that did this. He didn't describe the engine running away but did say you can't miss when it happens due to the smoke! He only implied that the turbo needs replacing but if I were you I would get you engine checked by one of the local experts while still under warranty. You don't want to spend the thousands I had to on mine after someone butchered it.

    Hi Carlie
    Hammer them.
OK as Dave states it MAY not have over-reved,but likely it could have.
Tell them in no uncertain terms you want a new motor under warranty.
Next line of attack is to go to a non dealer specialist, somebody can recommend 1 in your part of the world.Get the ECU scaned ($100or so).If the dealer hasnt wiped it it should show what hapened ie over rev/over heat/no oil pressure, registered as a fault. Those in the know here that use Testbook should be able to give you more info.Chances are the dealer would have cleared the ECU faults JUST IN CASE.

Oct 2000, driving along a bitumen road, car was 12 days old, (bought new) heard a high pitched squeal for a short time, followed by an almighty bang. plumes of thick black smoke bellowed out from the exhaust. i put brakes on and ground to a halt.

car towed to outback repair dealer in dungog nsw. mechanic advised turbo had blown. mechanic believes the trubo's seal broke causing oil to leak out, turbo heats up and . . . .

LR only wanted to replace the turbo but mechanic & I argued that as he couldn't find all the pieces of the turbo, the engine had to be replaced entirely so as to avoid future problems which they eventually agreed to do.

apparently this was the first time this sort of thing had happened to a TD5. I heard later that the turbo was one of a batch with 'faulty' seals but I've no way of knowing if that is true. nor do I know if there was a recall for the turbo on other TD5's.

but correction to mick, i had a fight to get a replacement car as i didn't have a credit card at the time nor the money to pay the $2K insurance excess deposit for a rental car. (i'd just bought a $43K car) they lent me one after i got back. LR assit paid for accom, fares for the bus-train, more accom, train and one last bus to get home. (3.5 days in total). and i didn't trash/thrash the musso.

He explained that as the turbo was out of action, oil and air was being pushed into the engine....."as long as there is oil and air there will be no damage".
i would not except that! ide be asking if he can account for ALL the broken compressor wheel blades, metal fragments off the shaft, brass from the destroyed shaft bearing, alluminium from the housing etc etc.... they can only really follow the air and oil! we know where that was going.

there is no way that any of these bits WOULDNT make it to the cylinders, or get stuck under valves, or in the inter cooler to dislodge at a later date.
as ace said it mighten happen now but later down the track.

follow what zook said coopers will do a good job of it. they also have a 4 wheel dyno to check if the enging is running to spec's.

    cheers phil.

most of the shrapen that comes out of a turbo will embed in the intercooler... I forgot to mention about having that replaced even if the engine showed no other signs of damage/abnormal wear.... the second they say they will replace it, walk to the front of the vehicle and jam a screwdriver into it Ive seen many "replaced intercoolers" that still bore marks from previous works done in the engine bay. This also stops some unscrupulous dealers using your vechile for other work...

Ive seen big red pulling another vehicle into the yard from the service department of a certain ford dealership using my recovery chain..

A certain service department got the full head of steam vented at them...
then the department manager copped a serve when he came out to find out what was happening.. Told me it wasnt happening, so I less than subtley pointed to the big red 4x4 with my whips pulling a snot box ford past all the new cars....

AT that exact time,, the idiots forgot my chains are 6+m long and nuff nuff in the towed vechile ran out off roll coming round the corner that big red just turned... the chain pulled up tight, cut to the shortest line and wiped out the front end of a brand new xr8 and tore the recovery mount off of the snot box.

    Justice... %*$(*&% ford dealerships....
