OK i undid the nuts and the stud broke and also the loose nut was a broken stud as well as a loose nut.
So i'll pull the whole lot off and replace them with the heavy duty ones and new gasket along with getting the manifold shaved and holes elongated a tad.
Thanks allfor your advice guys

First time just removed the stud and replaced with a new one. With the major rebuild last year I found the thread was gone so I re taped it and pulled the stud out when fitting the manifold. I now have a larger bolt in the end hole with locktite on it as I didn't want to stress the new new thread again. If it does go again I will be getting it partly filled (Build up the edges till it is to small and have the hole and thread re done for the correct thread.Originally Posted by Blknight.aus
do yourself a favor if ( I was going to say when) you have the manifold off leave the hole oversized and helicoil it...
If the thread dies the helicoil takes about 2 mins to replace and if the bolt binds to the helicoil the helicoil will unscrew instead. It means you have to undo each bolt a little at a time but you can still get them out..

When you fit new manifold gaskets make sure you fit them the right way around.
HUhhh! you all say they are ther same on both sides.
But when you place them against the exhaust ports you see what I mean, one way around they will be a perfect opening over the port, but when on the wrong side they will overlap the port by a smidgeon and not seal correctly and burn out quicker.

This afteroon i pulled the manifold off to find 3 broken studs, 1 in the front on the bottom and the 2 back ones and to make things worse, they broke about 3mm inside the head.
I tried but couldn't get them out with my limited range of tools, i even went out and got myself some easyouts but they didn't work, oh well just have to get our mobile mechanic from T.R.Spares to do it on thursday, he can clear the fault codes while he's at it.

Gday baz do you have access to a mig welder ...
If so wat you do is slowly build up hot tacks one on top of the other on the broken stud till it is proud of the hole enough to grab it with vice grips then they will undo nice n easy ive done this a few times and had heaps of success
cheers
