probabley wont be enough as the oil will just sit in the filter go the priming route...
The old trick i mentioned earlier is a bush method for when you have no other choices, something i should have mentioned in that post..

The pressure relief valve may have stuck or something else may have happened last time it was used .

My thoughts eggzachary as this is a common prob with the rover v8 id un do one of the sensors on the pump and have a helper crank the engin if you get oil squirt out the hole id be looking at the pressure relief valve as it may be stuck ...
If this is the case replace the sensor and start the eng and while it is idleing useing the handle of a largish screwdriver tap the side of the housing were the valve lives (sota tublar shape with brass hex head bung on end ) while your lil helper is watching the light n gauge this should free up the valve and shut the light off and show your pressure again ..
Cheers roger i hope this helps mate

A stuck oil pressure relief valve sounds more like it, as I wouldn't have thought that I had done anything to make the oil pump lose prime. Unless that can just happen spontaneously (which I have never heard of on any engine). Is the pressure relief valve somewhere near the oil pressure sender switch and oil filter and oil pump housing?
You aren't too late. I'll probably tackle it on Saturday morning when a mate comes round.
Roger
Ok roger the pressure relief valve is cast into the oil pump as i said the tublar part with the brass hex head bung screwed into the end of it the bung has a spring under it and the valve is on the other end of the spring inside the the pump to get it out you undo the brass bung and out she comes the spring losees its tension and the valve wont stay shut or it gets jamed hence the scewdriver handle in my last post ..
Refer to your manual and have a look it will show the valve ..
Cheers
Chris
Thanks for your replies so far, folks.
I have finally got onto the job of re-priming the oil pump on my Stage 1 V8. I have a big tub of vaseline. I have removed the oil pump cover. That was much harder than I expected because there is an adapter housing where the oil filter should be and hoses from it going to an oil cooler in front of the radiator, and the oil filter screws onto the adapter housing. It's bad enough that the special bolts need a 12 point 5/16" ring spanner, but it's even harder when the adapter housing gets in the way of everything. I gave myself a bit more room by removing the lower arm from the steering relay. The oil pump housing had only a small amount of oil in it, so I suspect a loss of prime.
Before I put it all back together, I have some questions about the oil cooler, as I am wondering about removing it:
* Was an oil cooler an option in the Stage 1? I can't see any reference to one in my books. Or was it a standard fitting (or an option) in some other variant of the 3.5 V8?
* Might the oil cooler have had something to do with the loss of prime?
* How worthwhile is an oil cooler? At present the oil does run cool. The whole engine seems to run fairly cool. I have had no problems at all with overheating. I have done heavy work with it (including towing other Land-Rovers on trailers).
* the oil pump idler gear looks pretty good. How would I tell if it was worn? The engine seems grunty enough and doesn't blow smoke.
Thanks,
Roger
If you're feeling like a bit of a read, Roger, have a look at the recent thread titled:
"OIL LEAK GOES BAD UH-OH".
I had a few other 'issues' as well, which thankfully have all been sorted, touchwood. (and thanks to all concerned).

In my opinion, others may differ, but the cooler you can keep the oil the better. If it's running well at the moment - why change it/remove it.
Can't see how it would have anything to do with the loss of prime - unless there is a leak.
I just get a feeling there's other things happening with Rogers V8, having had a few little probs lately![]()

Yep id keep the cooler and reprim the pump after it was fully checked over including the cooler in the check make sure it flows and the coolers work best if there above the hight of the oil filter
