    Alternator for defender

I'm about to mount 4 x extra 100w spots that I will be changing the bulbs to the 55w HID globes. I also hace 2 x 100 wattt spots on the bar. I have a standard defender batt for starting a century 11a0h dual batt and 4 x sonenshine 38ah gel cells hooked up to run 2 fridges and the winch. they are hooked up through the TJM IBS dual batt system.

Q: will I need a bigger alt if running the 2 fridges, plus all the spots at night. the winch isnt a worry as the motor is usually cranking if using it. opinions please.

from those numbers (assuming your using 4x55watt globes in the roof spots) i make your additional consumption to be 420watts for lighting which is 35 amps

lets say the engles draw a continious 6 amps each

that totals to 47 amps.. depends on what engine youve got as to how your alternator will stack up..

my td5 puts about 20amps worth on the alternator (clamped the alt charge lead) but my series diesel draws nothing

most alternators will push a little more than they are rated for for a short time..

so if you have at least a 65amp alternator on the td5 you might get away with it providing you didnt have every thing on all the time.

or if you had a 50 amp alternator on a series diesel then you would get away with it.

    hope that helps.

went thru this on the old site but cant find the thread.TD5 alt is rated at 120amps, I have the same spotty out put as you are talking about, but only run one fridge, had no probs when we did the math on this site back then, and have had none since the install.
