Thread: 300tdi Defender Purchase - Rear Seats/turbo

A fair bit of turbo lag is to be expected from a 300tdi. I notice a difference between cold and hot days - much less spool up time on a cold day. Which I guess shows you that there is room for improvement.

Fixes are:

Replace intercooler hoses with silicone, or just replace them.

Tweak fuel injection pump - search threads for numerous discussions on this subject. It is usually recommended to fit an exhaust gas pyrometer to when you do this to ensure you don't go too far. Injection pump makes a significant difference, although there is some speculation about engine wear as a result of this.

Replace intercooler with something larger.

Get a bigger turbo. They are around, and are said to make a huge difference.


Shift into low range for take off on hills.

Wrap everything in sight in insulating tape to try and keep the cool in.

Slip the clutch in a little later. With practice this can make a difference, but don't know about what it'd do towing a van.

Live with it. 300tdis will pull all day and all night, but they are slow dogs off the line.

Can I take my rearmost inward facing bench seats from my county and slot them into the back of a defender ? The defender's rear appeared to have plastic mouldings covering the frame into which my seats would slot up into. Is I remove this plastic, will my seats slot in aka county style ?

Can't help on the turbo bit. As far as I know there is no technical problem with fitting the side facing seats by simply removing the moulding.

However! I have a pretty good idea that the reason the Defender does not have side facing rear seats in Australia is that they do not meet ADRs. At the very least you would have to gain engineering approval for them and fit (and engineer ) the seat belt mounts fitted to your County. You would also have to get engineering approval for the removal of the seats from the County - I have heard that Qld is very fussy about the number of seats matching the data plate (although I must say my County does not have the number of seats marked on its plate - just the description "omnibus").

It would depend on the number of seats the vehicle is complianced for, and if you really need those seats, I think from memory that no "Defenders" were imported with the rear side facing seats, Australian ADR's, but, you could always import some "Exmoor" UK forward facing seats, but later 110's have successfully been updated and engineered (strengthing plated fitted) to take side facing seats I know of a 86 110 wagon that has full seating.

mine is a factory 9 seater. this is a factory seat belt mount bracket. it bolts right through to the chassis at the rear.

Mine is a nine seater as well

It is great as it is registered as a mini bus meaning i can use bus lanes on the coast

give the fuel pump a tweak and remove the muffler and resinator got mine going heaps better

i removed my main muffler and put a hotdog muffler in its place it made a difference to the turbo lag down low and the exhaust noise isnt that bad at all

Not getting rid of the county are you? Wasn't it you who said they could bury you with it?


Back on topic. I have driven a couple of tweaked 300tdis, they go great when you get the turbo on song, but they will never have the torque straight from idle that an ISUZU diesel has. You get used to it though, and they use less fuel.

For the seats check the ADRs - but side facing seats were still legal as of November 2003. If the vehicle is only complianced for 5 you will need to get a mod plate though. And most engineers will likely require a lot stronger seat and belt mounting positions than standard.

Usual rules for seats are: 75x75x3mm plate with rounded corners under each mount location, class 8 fixings. Not sure about belt mount positions - something similar.
