engineering will be a royal pain in the proverbial....
but it can be done!
G'day Folks,
From whoa back as some of you may know I was looking at selling my D3, well I have ummed and arrred still havent made my decision as of yet. Though if I do, I would be looking at either a Fender or D2, 03 models onwards. Despite some people ( and you know who you are) who think I couldnt go from a D3 to a Fender per se, I could. My question is I have been looking at a website ( thanks Outlaw) Exmoor Trim and Trakkers and they have single and bench seats for the load area as I need at least 6 seats. Has anyone had experience with fitting seats into their fender?? or D2 for that fact, thanks

Stevo, I made the move from D2 to Fender and haven't looked back. (The D2 was a concession to my missus). I had Belmore Automotive make me up 4 folding seats for the load area, so mine is now a road legal 9 seater. My seats face sideways and have full safety harnesses, but they also do forward facing like Exmoor.
There was quite a comprehensive discussion of this on http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=29903
I have also uploaded photos of mine to the galleries at:

The kids are absolutely MAD for these seats and refuse to travel in any other vehicle. I like the fact that I can fold them and retain most of my load area.
If you import the Exmoor seats (which look very good), you may have some issues with making them road legal. I would investigate this with the RTA (or whatever you have in QLD) before spending any money. They have 2 types of forward facing - the newest ones are esp made to be kid seat compliant. I am not sure however if you can fit more than 2 in the back.
I'm more than happy to provide further details or arrange a viewing if you're ever in Sydney.

Thanks for the feedback and links, I only need one extra seat.....just in case as we have 6 in the family but rarely use the current 7 seat set up as we have a "mine, yours and ours" scenario with the children, ie normally at most we would only have 3 maximum. It would seem better to find someone over here who can do the conversion like Belmore, will have to see if anyone up here in QLD does the same sort of work. Again thanks for the feedback,

No worries Stevo. I'm sure any of the fabricators can do you up a single seat. Check out the back of the RACQ magazine (classifieds) or speak to the RACQ guys (or whoever does road service in QLD) as they usually have affiliated suppliers. Another option to canvas is to install the centre front seat - if you can stand losing the cubby - if it is just for a child and occasional. Saves your load area. Gav
When I was in tassie I got some pics of a 10 seat fender, all 10 seats were buckets and gacing forward, the fender also had two extra doors. Will post when I get back.

Where abouts? the best that i've seen here was a 6x6 rangie in hobart!!
I wonder if it was one of the elusive stretched 147 defenders?

Thanks again for the feedback, from what I have seen, a single fold out seat would be best, facing forward as it seems to take up little space if it is not being used. There is a place in Melb that does D2 and Rangie seats, just got to find someone up here, RACQ seems like a good place to start. Dependant on which way I end up going ie Fender or D2, I can now look at even a 5 seater D2 and add a seat, as on the market they tend to be cheaper than the 7 seater. Decisions decisions, mind you all this keeps my mind off that I may still sell my beloved D3

Yep one of the extended ones, it was in Strahan and it was set up for railway line/mining tours, it had dual wheels on the rear and had drop down railway wheels
Bugger me!! Can't wait to see the photos of that. I must get down to Strahan!
