typical stealer service.and they wonder why they get a bad name. maybe a quick email to l/r au could be interesting.
Yesterday I got the 110,000 intermittent service on Td5 defender. Have to book it in to the nearest dealer as still under extended warranty and other approved service agent a few hundred kays further away. It was overdue and I was short on time.
So book it in, dropp it off and ask for them to give a good check over and have a look at some engine leak. Short story is they didn't have time for anything other than rotory filter and new oil as I wasn't prepared to be stuck overnight 120km away from home without my car.
Pick it up and notice I have been charged for a full service, $285, which includes $55 for 9L of oil and $35 for filter. Thats a rip off for labour and way too cheap for fully synthetic oil which I know costs about $100 bucks.
Anyway all had knocked off work when I pick up so I ring this morning to find out what oil they used. After about 4 different people I was told it is 10w/40 Castrol Magnetec.
Now I'm ****ed. One because I have always run it on the best fully synthetic and secondly because specifications state 5w/30.
Am I being a **** or do I have legitimate reason to be ****ed off and demand them to redo service or refund. The reason I have put this in the technical is I'm needing to know is that a major shift from the specs and is it serious in going from synthetic to non.
Or have I just got a cheaper oil in the girl that will require more frequent changes.
Oh they did also tell me my rocket cover and the front pully are leaking. But they couldn't really say if it was serious.

The answer is in your question ( stealer )![]()
Hi Nornalup
I would get right up the dealer, ask them to drop the oil and filters and redo the job, scratch the filters so you know they did it.
Then go plan B,the mineral oil WONT do any harm in the short run, offer them a compramise, settle for a set of filters and keep them for your next service.
I doubt wether the oil used will invalidate your warantty but will definately shorten the service interval.
Will have to get to your bit of the South Coast oneday, had too good an easter holiday in Esperance last year so your bit misses out this year.If your able there are a few of us heading there!!!!

If they have put off spec oil in and they are a dealer, yes you have a right to complain and to take it up with LRA (if they'll listen).
What I think you will find though is that Castrol Magnatec does conform to the Td5 oil.

This is exactly why I have always and will continue to do all my own servicing/maintenance. They never do as you ask. The only 'vehicle' I have had professionally serviced is my ride on mower (to maintain the warranty) and the reccomended mechanic couldn't even get that right!
Get stuck into them. If you didn't get what you asked for, you have a right to be ****** off.

I would get up them. Even if its ok to use it's not compliant with specs in the manual so I wuold want a refund or a written guarantee that nothing would go wrong with the engine till after 500,000km (Yes I know they would never write the guarantee).
Given its a waranty job they should put in the right gear.
BiLo brand 20w50, rebranded as Land Rover $9 a litre.
A SYdney dealer did this to me moons ago for a new Disco, but the oil came in 200litre drums (and I was then working for the supplier, but in a different division so I found out the price)
It was $8 a litre then, to me or others who didn't know better, but just 19.25 cents a litre to them.......
Nuff said, except for 'caveat emptor'

10/40 is the summer oil for the td5.... (darwin/townsville during the dry)
5/30 is the broard spectrum (everywhere but the desert and antartica)
and off the top 5/10 is the arctic conditions oil..
not trying to back the stealer but Ive had mates query me when Ive done services for them and used a different oil than the one on the data plate..
dig up the back end of your manual and they should have a chart of what oils are good for what ranges of temps..
and whats funny is... get a manual from a 95 3.9 and compare it to a 96 3.9 same engine with a slightly different oil chart..
