    Unhappy Cooked Transfer

As we were heading off on our holidays, tragedy struck. While cruising at 100 towing a trailer i started getting grinding noises from the transfer and the smoke in the cabin and under the bonnet. My lt230 had cooked itself
RACV total care came to the rescue and have given me a car for 12 days and towed the poor Rangie home.
Today i pulled off the bottom cover to find it full of metal shavings and about 100ml of burnt oil

    Now what to do?
The transfer is only 5 months old (second hand).
    Why did it over heat?

Is it possible that the transfer failed or is it my fault by not checking the oil level since it had a slow leak?

I know it sounds cruel, but you should've checked the oil level in it!

That's why it overheated - NO OIL!

Quickest and cheapest is another 2nd hand one .....preferably with a warranty ........Check the oil in it - especially if you know it leaks!

PS - Dropping some Oil Stop Leak is always at least woth a try when you first notice leaks......if it's only dry/shrunken seals that will often fix/help/reduce the leak ...or let you know it's serious and requires work!

Sorry for the hijack, but the workshop that changed the rear main seal on my 92 Range Rover forgot to check the oil in my BW. when I went to change it about 2 weeks later I found 100Ml in there. As you can imagine I was not amused.
Yet the transfer had suffered no ill effects( so far anyway at about 5000Km).
This may be a balancing positive for a BW to the critics as the chain only needs to splash a bit.
The owner of the workshop who has been around Rovers since he was born reckons the BW is a tough old beast and will tolerate a lot.

I got 3000km towing with my LT230, and when the auto failed and I fitted one while on hols, I checked the transfer oil to discover about 3 to 400mls in it.
I still can't believe it didn't fail. I fitted the case up to the box, and both my offsider and myself had thought the other one had filled it!! All thios was done at the last minute, rushing at night to finish a job doesen't pay....

Sorry about the TC, but I'll say it as gently as possible,,,,

Please try and check the oil level often if it has a leak. Thankyou.

A good idea to help forgetful old home-mechanics, is to make a label on the computer in the biggest font available, using the most hideous and eye-catching colour available, and tie it to the steering wheel with a rubber band before you start the service.

    A sign that says something like;

    HAVE YOU REPLACED THE OIL?

or as I do when servicing, remove the filler plugs and the drain plugs, put them in plastic baggies and then leave them on the drivers seat/zip tied to the 12 oclock pos on the steering wheel or put the keys in with them in the baggies.

Its never let me down when Im servicing vehicles or when im being assisted.
