    After market ECU's

    Hi All
Has anyone fitted a aftermarket ECU to there Rangie as I am thinking of doing this to fix the idling problems that I have with the 4.6 conversion any suggestions on what is available and ease of fitting would be most appreciated.
    Regards

My '86 classic had a 4.6 fitted. The original EFI was incapable of fuelling a 4.6 so the engine had larger injectors and an aftermarket Haltech EFI ECU. The flapper system was removed and replaced with a simple MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor. It wasn't an expensive MAF sensor like the P38A, it was a simple and cheap semiconductor.

The engine and ECU install was done by John E. Davis Motorworks

I relocated the ECU from under the seat - see http://members.optusnet.com.au/thebe...vermod.htm#efi

Actually a MAP sensor is the solidstate equivalent of a vacuum can [as on the side of the dizzy] and doesn't DIRECTLY tell you how much air is coming into the engine to be burned but rather only the "a"bsolute "p"ressure inside the "m"anifold, this being related to how wide open the throttle butterfly is, and the "load" on the engine amongst other things.....but not directly the mass/volume of air being ingested.....

Although perhaps the Haltech system IS able to derive the quanta of air incoming from a set of preset data that is specific to individual sets of data relevant to a specific engine or by some other means.

I've heard some good stuff about the Haltech system, could you give some more info on what it is and how it works.....I DO know [or at least believe] it's basically a sophisticated integrated injection and ignition system.

But a MAP sensor is very simple, cheap reliable and accurate - all-in-all the perfect requirements for such a component!

I did have the software for the ECU so I could download/upload the fuel maps. I may still have the maps which could be used as a starting point. I guess that ideally the maps should be checked on a dyno.

Mine was an early Haltech system so it only did the fuel system, not the ignition.

The current Haltech systems can be viewed here: http://www.haltech.com.au/

Of course, there are the MegaSquirt http://www.megasquirt.info/ and MiniSquirt for those who want to build their own.

Member "The Dude"s RR has an aftermarket ECU fitted under the drivers seat but I don't know what type it is.

Would I be right in assuming your RR has the GEMS system fitted ?

    Hi All
Yes it has the Gems system the main problem is getting it to idle I don't think that the motion sensor has been wired into the system it will idle when cold or when up to running temp but if I put the air on it is a pain in the butt and stalls all the time. The ECU is mounted behind the battery just similar to the disco. I would like to get this fixed before I take it off road to much.

Maybe you should check, and clean if needed, the IAC [Step motor]...... also check for correct signal [connected up correctly????] from A/C to ECU to get idle up.

    Hi All
Thanks for the suggestions everyone I will try what has been suggested and let you know the results. But from what we have found out so far it might be the engine speed sensor on the gearbox seen it is not connected.

Is this engine in a P38A or an old Rangie?

I was under the impression it was in an old RR.

It is in an old RR but it has been fitted with the GEMS system from the P38.
I can't tell you why it was done, I just know there were quite a few headaches getting it all done at the time.
