    bugger.....reconditioned gearbox needs to be fitted

    looks like i have to fit a reconditioned gearbox to my defender...mainshaft is worn to buggery amongst other things and it felt so good and smooth too... oh well.. you live and learn...

    any hints or tips on making the job easier?

    Take the floor panels out and use an engine crane. Make sure you use 2 chains, one around the gearbox and the other around the transfer case to stop the whole lot trying to turn on you when you slide them back.

    Like this:







    You may as well do the clutch and clutch fork whilst you're at it.

    Was this finding as a result of your visit to the mechanics today ? If so, what did they quote for the job ?

    yep

    more money than i have :P

    they have looked after me with a better than normal price on the reconditioned gearbox and i am very appreciative of that...

    it did drive really well, i dont know how bad it will be now all the gunk has been disturbed..... oh well life sucks at times...
