Freelander, should I just shoot it!

    Hi All,
My wife has a 2001 freelander (SE soft top 3 door auto) that's giving nothing but trouble. Most days it has no gear indicator on the dash or the little light down on the transmission to show what gear it's in. It also randomly illuminates the TC/HD/ABS and airbag lights on the dash and to top it all off, today it flat out refused to start after running fine. Was turning over fine (new battery) but just refused to fire. Then after 2 hours organising a tow etc, it starts no problem!
Unfortunately this car has been a nightmare for 6 years now, contantly going back to dealers in Albury and Melbourne but never been fixed. Lately they say they can't even find any faults! The worst part is it only has 32000km on it and spends most of it's life parked in a shed!
Does anyone have any ideas that might help us before we give up on Land Rovers for good and leave it parked by the side of the road somehwere!

all the majors have monday cars.. go visit some of the others brands support websites and you will see horror stories there as well... sure land rover has had a few badies, but so do the others, ask my mate up the road what he has been thru with 2 of his ravs... not pretty..

if you get a bad one, you either ride it out or offload it, its the way of the world...

hope it works out for you at the end of the day...

You have to look on the positive side - at least with only 32000km it wouldn't have had time to drop the liners or have the gearbox die.

    Re the starting issue:
We've replaced a few ignition switches over the years on these. Maybe check the ignition circuit still has power while the engine is cranking.
It could also be fuel related (intermittent fuel pump).

    Re the warning lights:
The lights illuminating at times indicate temporary/soft faults. The dealer should be able to retrieve the fault codes from the car & carry out diagnosis.
The ABS lights could be down to something as simple as a sticking brake light switch which is fairly common.

At 32k, chances are, the fault could be caused by uneven tyre wear confusing the ABS sensors.

We have a Freelander here that has ben very close to getting that treatment (matches anyone?). We are now waiting for a vehicle loom to fit and see if that fixes it. On the plus side, LR have been good about it and are covering the cost of the repairs (ongoing fault since new, now 5 years old).

Thanks everyone, unfortunately for us, she has always dealt with wodonga prestige before they lost the land rover contract and they were useless to say the least. None of the problrms ever seemed to be fixed properly and in the end she just gave up. We've moved now so can anyone recommend a good dealer that would be able to help in either the ballarat or melbourne area?

    Thanks.
