Running Empty - TD5 - fuel pump damage

    Folks,

A numbnut mate ran my D2 dry, then cranked the battery flat

Anyway, it this likely to result in damage to fuel pump, or anything else significant?

It would not prime or 'fire up' after it had been refuelled, only cranking over...apparently.

I only had the fuel pump replaced in about Nov', but now am being told that due to it being run dry it is stuffed and needs replacing.
    Does this sound right?
Is there any other damage that could have resulted from this?

The tank had been 'emptied' once before, but after refuelling and going through the 'restart' process in the manual, fired up fine.

Any thoughts or suggestions? other than shooting those responsible!!!

I don't think that the short time running like that would cause a problem.
To prime the fuel system, you would usually have to cycle the ignition 6 - 10 times (letting the pump run until it stops each time). Then crank with half throttle and it should fire. This is assuming that there is now fuel in the tank .

    Nope. So shoot away.

I've run out once, but after following the handbook sequence it fired up.

Might be worth while changing filters, you've picked up the sediment at the bottom now.

Is the pump making any noise at all?

Does not sound right to me, I recently collected a heap of crap in the pump and it would not start after the tank had fallen below half. After pulling the pump out and cleaning it, it now is all OK, but it wails like no tomorrow once it falls below half

I am absolutely no expert on fuel pumps but I've run my TD5 130 dry 2 or 3 times and it doesn't seem to have damaged anything at all. Still runs like normal once the tank is re-filled.

You need a good battery to get it going again though. Can take 10-12 cycles of running the pump and cranking.

Hope there's no damage to yours.
