Maybe poor quality control - variation in standards, I suppose. Or maybe there's some subtle but essential part of the set-up that makes all the difference? A castor angle, or wheel offset, for example, which transfers a stress or a shock-load from somewhere harmless to somewhere catastrophic. With such a small number of portal conversions in existence, it's hard to see a pattern of success or failure.
