Oh wow !! I've been so excited for so long about portals for my 6x6... This has put a downer on my day !! It seams oilworker has been all over the work with them. I wonder what the differences are.

    Just catching the perentie bug.

Don't give up ,contact Wolfgang and see if he has any of the original 5" portal box.
The same as the prototype .
Mine have been going well no problems .
I have made my own bracing a bit different to Wolfgangs just in process of fitting
However I had no issues without bracing (no extreme rock crawling)
Just vic high country and touring munga ,creb ,ect,

Oilworker seems to have put his 130 through the mill with his portals, and says they have performed flawlessly. Very odd that there should be two such completely different outcomes!

Maybe poor quality control - variation in standards, I suppose. Or maybe there's some subtle but essential part of the set-up that makes all the difference? A castor angle, or wheel offset, for example, which transfers a stress or a shock-load from somewhere harmless to somewhere catastrophic. With such a small number of portal conversions in existence, it's hard to see a pattern of success or failure.

It does seem strange, The puma runs a different suspension geometry, however I find it hard to think that could be the reason.

I think Chook has put his portals through a lot more. It is almost impossible to find any serious 4x4 tracks in Germany.

Does not Oilworker have a different type though? I thought there were two versions, one more compact with higher gearing. Certainly Oilworker has not just driven in Germany. I recall trips to Africa and Russia.

Iam all most certain there have been 3 different configurations of the portals to date .
The very first like Roberts seem to be fine .
    Can't comment on the others.

Information is that the 1-6-1 portal is no longer being made by Tibus .

to clarify your post, is the 1-6-1 portal the 5" prototype you refer to earlier?

If anyone knows what versions have seen the test of time and those that have not it would give us ignorant ones a better idea of what is what. I know Iain had the 4" version.

Yes the 5" is the 1-6-1 portal box the first ones made by Wolfgang and the ones oilworker was running .
