    water pump replacement on 4bd1

looks like the water pump on the 4bd1 has a problem. No change in temperature just noticed after looking under the bonnet. Coolant is pooling under the pump.

Am I up for a replacement pump and how difficult is it to do myself?

    thanks

Iron pump. Can be rebuilt. Go to an Isuzu truck or industrial engine dealer for a repair kit. Or go to a truck wrecker for a used pump ex an N series Isuzu or a Ford Trader.

its a doddle, tho depending on the internal corrosion on the shaft/impeller seperating it without a press and suitable drifts might rise a few 4 letter word combos..

If you cant do it and dont need the gear send it up my way and I'll knock it over here..

Its a 4bdI pump and I can claim a work competancy on it.

thanks Brian and Dave for the replies.

I took a serious look at it this morning. There was a small slit in the hose between the thermo housing and water pump. I replaced it this morning and it seems to have fixed the problem. I did notice there was corroded bits/grains inside the old hose. Is this a sign of a problem. The motor was sitting for about 4 years without a radiator or coolant.

Also, i noticed a grease nipple on the waterpump. I tried greasing it but my gun is stuffed (do you grease guns Brian?). How often should this be greased.

    thanks again.

No, don't sell grease guns unless I acquire one in a mixed auction lot. Have a Macnaught minilube for my own use and until I acquired the County-Isuzu, it had not been used for years, modern cars dont have grease fittings. I looked in both Isuzu workshop manuals that I have, the automotive one and the industrial one, and neither mention using the grease fitting although it is shown in exploded views. The books say to repack with multi-purpose grease on re-assembly. If it hasn't been apart or greased for a good while, then I suppose a couple of pumps wouldn't hurt, but dont overgrease as excess might find its way into the coolant and start blocking tubes.

thanks for the reply Brian. I have a Mcnaught. Bought it new and hardly used. No resistence when pumping and no grease. The gun has a cylinder cartridge that is probably half full (the length of my finger anyway). Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Is it the one that clamps on top of a 5kg tin of grease with a spring loaded rod and piston that pressurises a hose and gun assembly? If so, you can get a repair kit which is really bugger all, just a couple of springs, balls, & o-rings which fit comfortably in a half of a pay envelope & for which you have the privilege of parting with about $20. Even a pom could fit.

    Hi Guy's,

If your going to get a genuine water pump repair kit, please be aware unless things have changed since I did ISUZU parts, that their water pump kits do not contain the bearings. You have to buy them separately.

If its the one hand operated canister gun you need to bleed it once a new canister is fitted. Does it have a bleed nipple on the top. Its a spring loaded ball in a stem. You pull out the primer shaft and turn till it stays out. Then push on it while pushing the spring loaded ball in. You should get a heap of air then grease.
