How many KM has it done???

my 'fender has a harmonic vibration right on 100km/h in fifth, 80km/h in fourth (dunno rev's) which has been reduced since my clutch change where I had the flywheel and cover balanced and lagged the exhaust from the turbo dump to the back of the gearbox.
It became apparent when I installed the 3" exhaust over 12 months ago, so I'm putting it down to a harmonic that's been amplified by the big pipe. (no flex joint either)

There has also been an annoying, intermittent 'buzz' in the firewall area that I finally collared the other night. It was a combination of the glowplug timer/relay not quite tight enough on the firewall (needed a slightly bigger screw) and the cable ties holding the harness behind it loose and working together. It made it feel like the whole car was shaking.

    Hi Sclarke,
The disco has done 260K and I still have the vibration problem. I have just about given up and put up with it. I am at a loose end with this one.

when was the clutch last changed ?
There was a TSB years ago that some clutches were causing a vibration at 2000+ RPM. It ended up being a balance issue which is why I had my flywheel/cover balanced.

    Vibrations.

    Hi Phillip.
My 300Tdi Defender has just started a vibration when on the move and accellerating (is that the right word to use for a Defender?) and it goes as it gets a bit of speed up. I thought it may have been the exhaust which used to touch the long range tank, but I checked and it's not touching.
Please keep us informed about what you find.
    Alan.

YAHOO! I fixed my vibration problem. The vibration when not moving was coming from the engine. I got the timing slightly advanced and presto vibration gone. I still had a slight vibration when moving, so, off came the rear tail shaft and donut. After a very close inspection of the donut (which had no cracks in it) I found that the fibers were broken inside it which made it feel soft. I replaced it and checked the guide bush and pin which was okay and vibration is now gone.

    Hey Rick,
    Was this an expensive exercise?

Also when you say lagging on the exhaust do you mean some kind of exhaust wrap?

    Cheers,
    Cameron

I'd have to dig the invoice out, but re-face and balance was around the $130-150 mark. It was during a clutch change, and while the f/wheel looked ok, I'd rather get it re-faced, and I thought, while it's there, they may as well balance the flywheel and cover.
The vibration at 100km/h is almost imperceptible now.

and yes, I was talking about header wrap. I had a brand new roll in the shed for years left over from my racing days, but wasn't game to use it on a roadie until Inc's experience from this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread...st+wrap&page=2 so I've wrapped it back to the first flange joint at the t/case.

I have the same vibration problem and I am being told it is the Flex Plate, I have just changed the flex plate for a good second hand one, I have also changed the torque converter and auto gearbox for good second hand units but all that this has done is move the vibration progressively up from about 1800rpm to now 3000rpm.

Changing the flex plate moved the vibration up the rev range to about 2400rpm and changing the box and converter just moved it up further to where it is now (3000rpm).

I have been advised to buy a brand new flex plate but am running out of money fast, have you fix your vibration issue?
