I have a perplexing poser to add to the wading plugs issue.
The owner's manual says 300Tdi has a wading plug but only for the manual tranny.
    Further:

    "Automatic models

NOTE: The flywheel housing is completely sealed to exclude mud and water and there is no requirement to fit a wading plug."

But I have a 300 Tdi with auto gearbox, and it has an open, threaded hole where the manual (the book) says the wading plug goes on the manual (tranny) version.
So, what gives? Any other 300 Tdi auto owners here?

I've got a 300 TDi Defender and it has a hole in the same spot.
I always wondered about that being open, espsially when the water is coming over the bonnet!
I dont have a owners manual so I was unaware that there was any requirment for a wading plug. My mechanic has never mentioned anything, but I'll ask him next time I see him.

BTW its good to see mine is not the only one with a good healthy splash of oil underneath.

Isn't the whole purpose of a wading plug to keep water out of the clutch? Which explains why there's no need for one on an auto.

    I understand that.
But I have an auto, and it has an unplugged hole as shown in the photo.
And, the attached manual diagrams of the auto tranny housing also show a hole.

Looks to be just a drain plug. The picture shows it on the engine bellhousing, rather than the auto itself.
