Thread: need a second spare wheel, but what?

Any old wheel that you steal should work fine.

just remember, you need to obtain & carry steel wheel wheelnuts to use with your odd spare as they require different ones from the alloys

The factory alloy wheel nuts hold steelies on fine

The factory alloy nuts are tapered on the end to hold steel rims. For example, early P38As came with a steel spare.

the alloy nuts on the early rangies are tapered too but I thought that was just to make it easier to push them through the wheel?

The shaft on the early alloy nuts that threads around the hub bolt is only a couple of mm thick and I've snapped a couple. I don't know if I'd be happy with them holding on steelies.

If the nuts were interchangable why would they make two different types?

If you get a matching alloy that gives 2 identical spares so tyre rotation is a breeze.

I thinking you need some lessons in basic tightening

My mate has run them on his disco with steelies for the past 4 years with either 33" jungle trekkers or 32" BF's, WITHOUT ISSUE

Yep, one taking a tight nut off, the other tightening one up
