Blue smoke & Oil Usage Issue

I have a 200 Disco II Td5 which has just started blowing blue smoke and using heaps of oil. I've only have the vehicle 6 weeks and it already is starting to cost me $'s to keep it on the road. Lets hope tis is not a sign of things to come!

Does anyone know what might be causing this. A mechanic has sugessted that the turbo is on it's was out as he can hardly turn the turbo by hand and that it seems to have a loose housing. I don't know if either would be true as i don't know if it normal for them to be tight to turn by hand and if the housing should be tightly fitted to the vehicle or have a bit of slack in it.

Doea any one think it may be something else or knows of something I should also check if it is in fact the turbo.

Also, if it is the turbo does anyone know where I can get a new or refurbished one from.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In N/A engines the first suspect is valve guides or seals and stuck rings - but once a turbocharger is fitted this becomes by far the most likely suspect, particularly if it develops suddenly. So I would say the most likely problem is the turbo - I'd get an expert opinion on it.

If the mechanic says its hard to turn by hand that would indicate something is wrong internally. They can be rebuilt as far as i know. Take it to a diesel specialist and have them check it out.

the turbine should be able to spin freely.......very freely......
if you have any problems like you mentioned......get it repaired asap before it gets more expensive........

it sounds like one of the bearings may have gone south.......how many kms has it done......?

    Thanks guys,

I'm having the turbo rebuilt as we speak so hopefully that will put an end to the blue smoke.

The engine has done approx 110K.

The turbos on TD5s don't spin freely by hand.
Also its usually a lot cheaper to buy a new turbo from LR than to have one rebuilt.
