I just bought some jbl 6x9 speakers in speaker boxes then bent some sheet into L brackets and mounted to cargo barrier. I also switched the 4 inch int he front for JBL's and they made a huge difference,
the speakers are ,ounted top corners of the cargo barrier with 3 bolts and locknuts. they survived three weeks of cape york corrugations and lots of tuff trips with no issues and much better sound
come to think of it Noddy did something similar!!! I will have to have a look see next week at Kimba.

I'm in the process now, I have bought a pair of splits and have made a speaker box that goes across the top of the cargo bay just behind the cargo barrier. It is cut up towards the roof through the middle so it doesn't interfere with rear veiw. I have ordered a spare set of top cargo barrier brackets so I can mount the box between the existing cargo barrier mounts and the new ones which will be further back.
While on the subject, will a CD player mount in the defender and work?
I believe they have to be pretty level, how do you achieve that when the original is at about 48deg.?
Steve.
LR Hydbrid,
I'm not far from you so just drop me a pm and come around and have a look if you want.
CD players will def work.
WOW Sight & Sound have some pre formed plastic speaker boxes of a few different shapes that will screw directly on to the roof liner. Didn't check to see if any would suit the defender but im sure they will have something.
is the sound of your TD5 not enough music to your ears???????![]()
Defenders do have their own unique song on the freeway.![]()
Quick question:
Were the JBL's a direct swap for the existing speakers? That would be very handy.
Re the angle of the CD player:
When I was living in Alice I had a very cheap non-brand name header CD unit, and it skipped a lot. Since then I've relocated to Melbourne and put in a better quality kenwood unit (not a fantastic one, just the base spec that could read MP3 on CD) and its been great. Very little skipping, even offroad...
As far as the location of the additional speakers, I didnt want to put them in the extreme back, as I'm try to isolate that area from the cabin (its the 2 door panel van remember) to cut down on noise. I'm actually putting them in the B pillar.. there is a surprising amount of gap there under where I would imagine the trim panel would be.
I say imagine, because we dont have trim panels on the hardtops.. because, real men drive them
cheers
Dave
