    TDI Starting Probs

Ok guys my 300tdi dont start no more

I'll give u a quick rundown on whats been happening

Truck runs dual batteries and turbo timer...Now the 1st thing that started happening was very ocassionally i couldnt turn the engine off..I would turn the key and the battery light would come on but the engine would continue to run until i disconnected the battery....

Then 2 weeks ago it started to struggle to turn over but always managed to start...I guessed dead battery but had them tested and the main batt is fine and the 2nf one is ok but wll need replacing soon...

Yesterday i tried starting it and had nothing so i tried again and this time i heard a relay or the battery isolator click in and i had power..The engine turned over but would not start then i could just here the above mentioned clicking noise and the engine would not fire....

So what i need to know is there a relay on the ignition system that might be causing this?

Could the batt isolator be shagged out(this is my guess as it was quiet warm after tryin to start)

Or am i totally off on the wrong track

    Please help!!!!!!!

    It sounds like two problems.

    1. flat battery - till the battery isolator kicks in the 2nd battery. It may test fine after a drive, but o/night it's probably draining the other battery.

    2. I think your turbo timer has a problem and is cutting off ignition.

that's my online prognostication, I could be totally wrong.

sounds like your fuel solinoid is staying powered
it explains the failure to stop & the battery drain

I think michael's onto it and I'd look at the turbo timer first

if the relay checks out fine you might find its the fuel cut off control solenoid itself not doing its thing. Its powered when its in the one position and doesnt turn itself off untill its in the cut position.

if its not quite reaching fully closed then you have the problem of a, no stopping, and b, about a 1 amp draw while it keeps trying to turn itself off.

Thanks for the reply guys appreciate it but i aint done yet!!!

I'm on a disabilty pension so having someone look at it for me is out of the question....I have the Defender Manual on cd and are fairly mechanically minded(fitter)but not electrically bright!

If u could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

Do all of the earth straps first... redo ALL of the battery connections and the starter connections...

clean all the connectors from the relay box that you can get into.

Follow the wire from the cut off solenoid to the control relay, see what disconnecting that with the engine running does for you. If it shuts down its electrical prior to the relay, if it keeps running its in the solenoid itself.

but its been a while since I played with the tdi electric shut down and might have crossed my wires on the isuzu setup.

where the hell is Narre Warren?

    Howdy Kev,

As blknight.aus has suggested, check all earths, especially those on the LH side trans crossmember bolt, these come out of the battery box on the fender and are main engine earths. Also check the starter isn't loose on the bellhousing, don't laugh, I had a new Td5 one like that; bolts weren't done up and the top nut was actually missing!
The failure to turn off is very likely the shut off solenoid, attached to the injector pump under the throttle cable bracketry there is a wire and plug, this is it. You can replace them in situ, but be careful as the little spring and pintle can fall down and be lost forever if you are doing it on the back lawn....If you are able, borrow one from someones known working example. I may still have a spare, I'll have a look at work on Monday( I could send it up for you to try if it helps, if not the prob just send it back.) I recently replaced one for the same reasons on a 200Tdi Disco, not starting sometimes and not shutting down intermittently.
***Just re reAD your post, I would also suspect the turbo timer and check/ remove this first.***

    Consider this:

My truck normaly starts and stops instantly when the key is turned.

HOWEVER, If I have my 12 volt fridge plugged into the cigarette lighter socket in the dash it can take up to 30-40 seconds for the engine to stop when the key is turned off! I can remove the keys, lock the doors and walk away before the engine stops. It scared the crap out of me the first time it happened. The second time I unplugged the fridge while the engine was running on and it stopped instantly. It mussent take much of a stray current to keep the fuel solenoid pulled in and keep the engine running.

Thanks for all the replies guys...

I ripped the turbo timer out and threw it to a far distant place..

    Truck now turns off instantly....

My batteries are not holding charge so i'll get them tested and replaced if need be

    Thanks Again Kev
