I have used the trailer socket on many cars and 4WDs over the last 20yrs to charge batteries in campers, caravans, boat trailers etc etc. The socket can easily cope with energised current. If it didn't, please explain how you are able to illuminate the tail lights and side lights of a caravan for example?

As for the cable to the socket and from the plug I would use 6mm sq cable and if this didn't fit the plug/socket simply splice in a short bit of 2-3mm sq cable. At the end of the day you are not going to get a gobfull of charge current over say 6-7m of cable anyway! At best the current will be around 10-30A at best which is OK anyway.

So, to those who doubt me - what do you think the maximum current is in a trailer socket? 5 amps, 10 amps, maybe 15 amps or more??

    Back to you.
Oh good... Another Electronics / Auto Electrics expert....

4 Posts to your count and your sooooooo about to get flamed

Guys... Just splice in an old 2cent piece to act as a circuit breaker.
Failing that, try some Alfoil, twisted to make it fit the fuse holder!

Grabbing one and sitting back to enjoy this....

I need some shut eye so I’ll try to answer that in the morning.

jik22, trust me, you don’t want to know other than I let my mouth run before I put my brain in gear.

    Cheers

Basically Teks has just opened his mouth and inserted both feet at once...

His advice is wrong / dangerous / a fire hazard / wrong / stoopid / wrong / incorrect / wrong / can cause problems / wrong.....

And shows a lack of knowledge of both electrical and safety....

He's also posting the aforementioned wrong/ dangerous / fire hazard information on a public forum, where people could possibly do something like he said and risk injury, property loss, fire etc....

Drivesafe, myself and others dislike unsafe posts, especially when they are very dangerous and made by persons unqualified to provide information on the topic....

Especially when they are decidedly incorrect on several levels.

Ah, OK.....I was thinking there was history there like the guy on the other forum that Drivesafe had a little spat with over basic electrical theory and dual battery controllers.

    That was very amusing reading.....

Hey Teks how much current will a flat, but in good condition battery draw when its flat?
How much current will a trailer plug carry when the battery is flat?
I am not being a smart **** but have seen a disco engine bay black and burnt due to too small wiring used for charging a battery. The owner never had a problem for some time..until the battery went flat and the current it needed to start the charge made the wiring into a heater, then flames. admittedly this is only for a short time but it did happen.
This was wired in by a reputable person..or so I am told
