    Which Landie

    G'day
I'm new to folder and straight away impressed, I have spent far too many years bumbling around in the dark. A work associate provided the link today, THANK YOU. I have owned many Landies over the years: II swb, IIA hard top, III hard top, V8 County wagon, 2 door Rangie and currently an 88 RR which has been fantastic, my wife has the 97 Tdi Disco, however time to update the RR. My first thought was to just replace the Rangie, unfortunately my local (very much trusted) LR Mechanic advised against a Rangie (he told me something I didn’t want to hear).

So a Defender seems to be the preference but, Which Landie a 130 dual cab or 110 wagon???
I have gathered much Land Rover data over the years, unfortunately nil on Defenders and I never driven either.

    ~ $20K budget, Please I would appreciate others experiences/ideas.

    Other Options:
95/96 RR cheap and re-engine, and re-suspension, or
    99+ RR and install gas.

    Regards

$20K should get you a late 300Tdi Defender with accessories.

Let us know where you are, in case someone local can get you a drive in their Defender.

While the County is a Bullet Proof car, it's the same vintage as your RR, so I'm guessing you want something newer.

now thats a can of worms question...

$20k can buy you a lot of landrover....

first ask yourself what do you want to do with it.....

the county/deefers are a bit agricultural but easier to work on and IMHO more dependable for it, But im a mechanic and thats a big influence for me.

The discos are a lot more urban but due to the missing inches in the wheel base are just as capable off road ESP if fitted with deefer wheels and springs.

and the rangies are pretty much the ducks danglies.. they cost more but deliver the goods in comfort... PITA to work on for some things but then all rovers have their hate jobs.

    V8? diesel? manual? auto?

and for that money you could potentially get yourself 10 series rovers... youd never need a spare part again...

Good to see you made it. A lot of the advice out there is wrong when it comes to Landys. I never saw the last guy 'I sent here.

If you are choosing between the 130 dual cab and the 110 wagon, which is better depends on your circumstances and priorities. The 130 obviously has a greater load carrying capacity, but some 110s have side facing seats in the rear, and so carry more passengers. Mechanically, apart from wheelbase, wheels and springs, they are identical, although there will be minor differences. Both have larger turning circles than your RR, but the 130 is sufficiently large to be a concern in parking areas. The 110 is, with a little practice, as easy to park as a large car (As far as I know all Defenders and almost all civilian 110s in Australia have power steering). Both are about the same height, and need caution in covered parking areas - the 110 needs 2.05m, I think the 130 is slightly more (assuming standard tyres and suspension).

You will find the Defender is noisier and lower performance than your RR, and lacking in refinement - but most owners have few problems driving long distances (I am planning to drive about 1000km in my 110 tomorrow).

Use the search option in the coloured bar above to find a wealth of information on other people's queries and problems. You probably need to look at the different engines that have been put into the Defender, and decide, if not which one you want, at least what to prefer and what to look for.

Note 1: Nomenclature - the 110 was introduced in 1984 to replace the Series 3 109. When the Discovery was introduced in 1989, the 110 (and 90 and 130) were renamed from "Landrover" to "Landrover Defender" to allow the use of the Landrover name with the Discovery.

Note 2: When the 110 was introduced in Australia, the only engines fitted here were the 3.5 V8 and the 3.9l Isuzu 4BD1 diesel (unique to Australia). The 2.5 petrol and diesel were never sold here. After the Defender was introduced only a diesel engine has been available here, and this has been the 200Tdi, followed by the 300Tdi and the Td5, all turbocharged, intercooled, 2.5 litre direct injection engines, the first two developments of the old 2.25 diesel, the Td5 a completely new five cylinder engine, which will be replaced later this year with a 2.4litre Ford Transit engine.

Note 3: There are at least three vehicles unique to Australia (apart from the use of the Isuzu engine). a) 120" version of the 110, as far as I know only made in cab/chassis. b) 6x6 110 - this is mechanically similar to the military Perentie 6x6 but retains the normal chassis width. Cab/chassis only, fitted with 4BD1T turbo engine and 4.7 instead of 3.54 diffs. c) There were a small number of 110 dual cab V8s made for the bicentennial Authority in 1988.
All of these are quite rare and command a premium.

    Hope this helps,
    John

    or a v8 county and a 300TDI defender/disco

There are designe elements in the TD5 that have evolved out of the tdi engines and have links back to the vintage 2.25.. And no I dont mean they both run diesel and have pistions....

the TD5 is a landrover engine with BMW flavouring... A nice compromise engine between something that will pull a tractor and go like a race car if needed...

(but I still want the torque curve down lower and made fatter)

if you are up for a project I would get a 120 V8 ute with galed chassis. Drop a dual cab ute body on it, get a maxi drive lt85 5 speed box and lt230 transfer, 4 bolt power steer box with soft defender steer wheel, 4BD1-T with intercooler, county v8 disc brake rear, rear maxi diff lock, driver side fuel tank, roof top aircon, a nice radio for when your sitting with the motor off.

that would be a good truck IMHO. You could probably get it for around $20k.

    otherwise a late 300 tdi 110 or 130.
    L322 tdv8 poverty pack - wow
