    Intercooler hi pressure side Elbow?

    Hi Bloke's,

After Looking over my Turbo with a Little new knowage, I found the 90dec elbow from the side of the turbo that heads towards the bottom of the intercooler is very very soft......As the "Breeze" is being pushed towards the intercooler, does it matter that its soft?

I just remember people talking about the pipe being sucked in, but how can that be if its being pushed past the elbow?

I was Looking at buying a new elbow but It may be a waste of money.....

It may, the softness may be ok, but one consideration could be that it shows age coming on and with that there is the increased chance of delamination in the layers of the rubber. The inner layer can lift if torn, or balloon if pin holed and effectually plugging the hole(this is often described as being sucked in, they may be talking about this). The ballooning can be very frustrating in that your first couple of inspections it may be hard to pick up.

Soft hose's regardless of delamination are discussed by racers etc who are chasing splits of a second... if the rubber swells on boost you are technically wasting time and energy pumping up rubber,,, instead of burning rubber.

In our case if the rubber has become soft enough to suffer any real swelling, it will eventually place enough stress on the cohesion of layers, that may lead to blockage.

I think a lot of people change the hose when they detect sponge... Contact Dullbird (I think) she was selling some silicon hose, which is a popular way to go (I think...again TIC)

If you're going to replace your turbo elbow, try pricing a silicone version - mine's holding up well after 2 years:

ps: you might need to trim it a bit.

Great thanks for info Duff, some are asking around the $160-$180 mark for two hose's , call me tight if you like but I cant see the value there.

But I have a young mate I know through work who has been in the hot 4 game playing with mods on wrx, evo's etc and he has a heap of stock left over from when he had a workshop, so I might get lucky in getting a cheap elbow , not sure about the top longer hose though, but it isnt any where near as soft as the elbow.....

and FWIW I prefer SFS or Samco hoses. They generally have more (4 ??) layers of braid than the cheaper silicone ones so cope with higher pressures better.

Suggest that you contact Mike (Tombraider) on this forum re silicon hoses. I bought some off him about 6 months ago to fit the TD5 turbo and intercooler.

To all of those people who have sent me emails re these hoses, please be patient.

I have lodged a cheque for a substantial amount of money this week and once clear will have the shipment underway to Aust.

I have everyones details on file and will advise once the shipment has arrived.
