A landrover mechanic up here fitted a disco one to my 02my Xtreme.
    Works fine.
The control unit is on the right hand side of the steering column.

Sounds as if all us Defender TD5 owners will have cruise controls soon

    Can anyone tell me why?

I have a 2003 build. Does this mean that I cannot fit it?

I did investigate some earlier on in the piece but at over $1000. I thought it was a bit over the top price wise.

Looking at the schematics the pin outs do the same thing but there might be softare changes that require a software module to talk to the ECU, like in the case of the new yank cruise control that can take its speed setting from the gps and inbuilt maps so that you dont need to worry about those spots where the road changes from 100 to 80 for a merging lane then comes back up to 100 again.

bloody smart, bloody lazy, typical yanks.

2002 onwards ECU is because it only works with the newer ECUs, which are flashable and have been used form 2002 on. The old ECU, which is not flashable does not work. You would have to exchange it for the newer one.

    Cheers
