    Tdi - engine oil escaping from filler due to pressure

    98 Discovery tdi - 190,000kms on the clock.

    From an inspection under the vehicle it appears there is a significant oil leak as everything is covered in a nice coat of anti-rust. Traced the oil all the way to the top of the block where it appears to be coming out the oil filler cap.

    I imagine this is due to a build up of pressure somewhere but where and how to solve i'm not so sure. Any ideas?

    blocked crank case breather is your first bet... find it and clean it up.

    pull the black canister thing off the side of the valve cover and clean it out with some brake clean or something like that and check all the hoses are clear. mine had this problem and actualy blew the gasket out on the timeing cover.

    Yep, the Black canister on the Drivers side of the Rocker cover will be the 1st place i would look. Make sure the hoses going from it to the Sump and intake are clear as well.

    Get onto it quickly as that is the 1st track for a Deisel running on its own oil.... then its bye bye engine.....

    Cleaned out the PCV valve last weekend and checked the hoses. Was not blocked and the hoses are clear. Oil is still escaping out the filler cap.

    What's the next thing to check?

    compression! got any photos or video of it? mine was bad enough to leak past the rear main and timeing cover gasket with the filler cap on

    What do you mean by compression? As for photos, I could, but imagine oil pooling around the top of the plastic cover near the filler hole and thats what it looks like.

    ahh i was thinking more of a mist like excesive blowby than actual oil. maybe as simple as the cap leaking but even with the cap off it shouldent realy spit oil out well not alot anyway.
