Thread: Got the wobbles

For a start the most likely problem will depend on what model you are driving, and more detailed description of the problem.

However, lacking such information, some suggestions -

1. wheel balance - are there hunks of mud inside the wheels, or just a while since being balanced.

2. If it starts after hitting a bump, and takes a while to die down, then lack of damping due to incorrectly adjusted swivel preload is likely.

3. Faulty shock absorber(s), or faulty bushes on them.

4. Any of the suspension bushes worn.

5. One or more tyres out of round.

6. Worn U-joint(s) on the front prop shaft.

Probably a few other things that I can't think of immediately.

Don't want to hijack this thread (too much ) but I have a similar thing in my 1981 Rangie. Front bushes have been replaced (back weren't ), wheel alignment & balance done (but some time ago and probably due for a new one) but it only happens occassionally. Then if there's a bump in the road (like expansion joints, etc) it stops. Springs are new, shocks are old (by the looks of them).

Any help greatly appreciated

swivell pin preload need doing.

Seeing Traveler says that the steering wheel has only a slight wobble, and that the movement is up and down, It would appear to be extreme out of balance, or maybe a bubble on the tyre from tread separation.

If he has a BIG steering wobble ( ie side to side movement) then its the old chestnuts of tie rod ends, or swivel bushes, or Panhard bushes.

Try to check for a googie tyre swap it with the rear on the same side and see if the wobble goes then it is the tyre, out of round/seperated casing.

Traveller has a Stage 1 ute.

I had a similar problem with the "new" Series III I bought recently. I swapped the tyres for road ones off my Stage 1 - problem disappeared. If you have that sort of option, try the tyre swap or rotation.
