    Replacement gaskets

I just removed all the pipes and thermostat and every thing to do with the cooling system exept the head and water pump tonight to do a complete cooling system flush. I am going to put in back together tomorrow and will need the two gaskets for the thermostat housing but i don't think i will be able to source the gaskets from the local auto shop. Does anyone know of a place in sydney nth area or west that is open sat morning being tomorrow or is gasket gue or black solastic or other products in a tube better than the original gaskets. Also is it safe to put corrosion inhibitor in my cooling system. And what colour coolant goes in the radiator Red or green?. I have a series 3 all original 2.25 diesel.

    Any help would be great.

You almost certainly won't get the gasket from your local bloke - depending on just where you are, I'd give Land Vehicle Spares in Silverdale (near Warragamba) a call - they almost certainly have them although you may need to buy an engine gasket set. Failing this I would get a sheet of gasket material from your local bloke and make one, or as a last resort use a good quality silicone gasket former.

The recommended coolant in the owners manual (just looked it up) is soft water or rain water with antifreeze added in freezing weather. But green anticorrosion would be OK. This engine was designed before the invention of "coolant". One point made in the manual, worth noting is "for the diesel engine, do not run it without water, even for very short periods". This is because the high heat transfer rate will damage the injectors.

yoinks! i hope i havent rooted it. I drove from port Maquarie to sydney with no water in it i think. hence the reason for replacing the gaskets and coolant. The raditor was full of rusty water when i left and i had to put about 3 litres in it to refill it. at home as it seemd to have a small leak round the thermostat.
I will give Land Veichle Spairs a call tomorrow.

    Cheers.

nice thing about cast iron engine is you dont need to have full coolant, just enough to get to the bottom of the pump impelller and it will throw it around enough to stop you from frelling the block and the head.

Dont panic too much about the injectors thems old school over engineered twice as much metal in em as you need to do the job and the needle and nozzle kits are only $30 each replacing them is a simple as buying an full injector service kit for $120 (does 4 injectors) and paying $50 to have a dieso shop slip em together and set the crack pressures...

Oh and run the cheapest fuel you can in the 2.25 filtered dewatered WVO is fine....

I just love these abuse tolerant lumps..... much better than the new lightweight go fast crap.
