LRA Body Lift and Alum Steering Shaft

    Hi Guys,
Finally got some time to work on the disco and fitted the 2.5inch body lift kit to my 95 Disco.
All went fairly well - needed a new clutch line, and longer oil cooler lines as i want to lift the radiator.

Biggest prob is that the Aluminum steering shaft that joins the column to the box is too short now - by about 15mm, and thats with all the adjustment out of it.

Has anyone else had this problem and how did you go about fixing it?

    Cheers
    Dave.

It may be the way, I really don't know but you'll have fun with the engineers doing this.

Ahhh, not the thing to be welding bits into

I've never come across this, even on disco's, need to look again, did you use all the slack, on both uni's and the rubber bit??

    LRA kit? Or home made....?

Mine never needed anything else, but I only lifted 2"....

What size rubber you looking to run under the thing?

Welding steering components is a big no-no I believe......

I put in a 2" body kit into my Subaru and the kit came with an new steering shaft of the correct length.

When I got the car regoed - the first thing the inspectors looked for was that a proper new steering shaft had been fitted and the old one had not just been lengthed by welding.

If your kit was a "bought" one rather than home made then a new steering shaft should have been required if the old one was no longer suitable.

LRA - hence saying it was a LRA kit.

Yep used all the slack I could in the uni's - not in the rubber as you can't space it, and its got directional head bolts - but I will have another look.

Definitely NOT welding any steering components - the whole reason for the LRA kit was for ease of engineering.

Hi Dave. It doesnt seem to make sense. AS far as I was aware the D1 steering shaft is actually longet than the Rangie but I have never had a problem on the Rangie.
I just put the LRA kit into my project ute a couple of months back and the steering seems to still fir together.

I took off my 2.5" lift kit as it is illegal in QLD. The was no extension on the column and looking at the steering column that came out the car, the only thing that was done to extend the shaft was to drill/file a new recess into the shaft for the pinch bolt.

By the way, if anyone wants the kit, it's for sale so PM me.
