not to be too harsh but I recon theres over 8 maybe 9 K in parts alone for that. and thats not a service, thats a major overhaul... youve pulled apart 2/3 of the bloody vehicle to get all of that done and put simpley thats the end reuslt of upping the power of your donk by a factor of at least 3, probabley more...

but at 27K to install it in the first place all those bits should have already been adressed. FFS it only cost me $5k to convert a series rover to V8 without upgrading the running gear and $3k to do that.

Oh yeah, for sure it's a major overhaul, "service" was tongue in cheek, the fellas sorting it now have been top shelf...they had all sorts of dramas sorting the issues out, and put 63 hours of time into it and only charged me for 30!
In hindsight, I would have gone down a different path, but I am no engineer and put my trust in those who told me all would be well...
I was told $10k to sort the top end on the td5 motor, any bottom end cost on top of that...
Chev conversion crew said "about $15k", yippee, off I went...
Still, the 110 is twice the offroader it was, but then again I could have had two of em' for the cost...

Personally i think you need your head read, to put a chev boat anchor into an earlier tdi def or county i could almost understand but to completely butcher a def extreme like that you obviously have more money than sense. But in saying that you payed someone to do the conversion for you so bad workmanship is no excuse, take the vehicle back and demand compensation.

loanrangie - Who cares it Jack110 decided to 'butcher' a Defender, it's his car and he can do what he wants to it. I personally couldn't care what sort of Defender it is, he got ripped sideways by the people who quoted for the conversion.

Jack110, I can only assume that you didn't look into that conversion as much as you should have. You also should have got the quote from your mechanic before you got all that work done and then filed a case against the people who did the conversion in such an unsafe manner as to not even do brakes etc.

I agree, thats why i said "personally ", and as i said further down he should take it back to whoever did the first butchering and demand to be compensated to what attributed to all this work being required now.

I am sorry to hear of your woes , the chev conversion is not my ideal motor but each to their own , its your cash and your car

I think the problems should have been raised with the mob that done the conversion first and given a chance to fix their stuff ups and damage their workmanship had caused

I wish you good luck i dont think you will see any $$ from the conversion mob ,as you didnt give them a chance to fix their suff ups
    Good luck

    Loanrangie,
On all initial advice given the cost of the Chev was not going to be more than $5k over what it was going to be to get the td5 back in order, and I reckon the td5 is a bit light on for grunt.
It went awry cost wise after the decision was made and committed however...
Having now driven my 110 for over 2 yrs with the Chev in it, in many varied conditions,I can promise you that the off road performance of the boat anchor is a world away from the td5.
As in, the boat anchor is so superior in performance off road it takes the defender to another level.
I don't pretend to be an expert but having lived in the Kimberley for a number of years I got a fair exposure to off roading...and Barra!
We used to go down the Gibb River road every 2/3 weeks (just to go out to dinner ), it was like a highway compared to the back way we'd take in daylight hours...
Anyway, I no longer have to keep the power on tap, stay in a power/torque band, keep the revs up etc...the power is there, always, everywhere...in the wrong gear(happens to us all) and in a situation where it's difficult to change down- no problem, the boat anchor will keep you in motion, where the td5 would not even go close.
On sealed roads it's better too of course but offroad is where the real difference is, low down torque that just keeps coming.
I wouldn't do it again, but I couldn't buy a new defender and live with the stock motor either....not a problem anyway, I gotta keep this one until I die now...

Yeah, hey maybe a honeymoon IN the landrover would be a good way to save $....and at least I know I'm assured of getting the 110 in the(very soon after landy honeymoon) property settlement...
