What I'd like to know is where do you sit with all those spares

When I went to Tassie from Brisbane (roughly 7000kms) the only part I needed was the air con idler pulley which I bought on the way home in Moree and fitted in their carpark with a shifter. It died in Tassie but who needs aircon down there? I just removed the belt.

Lucky I know but I was in a 1997 Rodeo (Isuzu reliabilty)

Having said that we spent a week in Sydney coming back from Perisher in a 2005 F250 waiting on an O ring for the fuel injection pump

Just make sure that all the extra weight in spares doesn't cause the problems you need to fix.

Also remember that whatever you take it will be the one thing you leave behind that will leave you stranded

mate that a lot of miles for 6-8 weeks..good to see you doing it, i read a story on the internet of a guy in sydeny i think decided at short notice to drive around australia in a month, he was driving a disco..good on him i say

when i did my simpson trip i went to a local land rover repairer and they did up a box of spares that they thought i should carry not that they new the mechanical history of my rig...when he had finished packing the box he mention he forgot clutch master cylinder kit, i said dont worry as you have enough in the box as it is, when he return with a box not much bigger than a match box i said you mays well chuck it in, well the only bit i ended up using was the clutch master cylinder kit at mt dare with 3 000 000 flies happy to assist....best part was no $$$ up front, not even a credit card swipe, fixed them up for the master cylinder kit on my return plus a six pack of beer for the boys

Thanks for reply thus far, I'm a diesel fitter by trade for too long, so I will have the mechanic along but he doesnt like to get his hands dirty any more and has linited experience on land/range rover. If I had to do no repairs on the trip that would make me a very happy boy but I am going to head off as prepared as one can be.
I had thoughts of an aux tank, doing some measuring it may well be better to just buy a spare fuel pump and use jerry cans when I need too?

A good First Aid Kit is a must (particularly if you are travelling solo) and i also recommend doing a basic first aid course - it could save your life.

Leave a copy of your trip plan with family/friends and have a series of check points where you plan to contact family/friends to let them know you are ok. If there is a case where you are stranded somewhere remote, it won't be long before you are missed and a search can begin. Once again - it could save your life.

Don't get too worried about carrying lots of gear. It doesn't take very long to get parts freighted to just about anywhere.
I travel around here quite a bit and all I have is a spare fuel pump and a spare tyre . The only reason for the spare fuel pump is that I have changed to an external Holden type of pump and I used a second hand one. The spare one is new and a 5 minute fit.

Just make sure the vehicle is in the best possible mechanical condition before you leave. If you are worried about anything at all, fix it first (battery, clutch hydraulics, etc).

A good list of spares. I'll be keeping this in mind when stocking up the Disco for a trip.
