    Angry Comms

Glad you mentioned Comms, especially as you are going solo! Maybe have a look at a Satsleeve or similar, turn your dumbphone into a sat phone.
I've never used one, but they seem like a good alternative to carrying two seperate phones and all the paraphernalia that goes with them, plus maybe a familiar device might be an advantage if you're in trouble. I'm considering one for the truck. The mobile coverage in this country is a disgrace, and it can get pretty lonely off the main traffic corridors. ( lonely is sometimes a reason to be out there by yourself, I get that )

    SatSleeve

    Not recommending them, jus FYI.

True and all the more reason to go! I know you can turn your phone off anywhere, but we don't tend to. There's nothing like no phone coverage for peace and quiet. We had none of it 25 years ago and didn't really need it. What bliss that was!

In Fact the contemporary over reliance on Internet and phone has led to poor service of many kinds outside the cities, because the assumption is that connection is available everywhere.

    Thank goodness it still isn't!

Agreed. And not just poor service either. Poor prep as well, as people seem to believe that help is just a 'phone call away even if they're on the moon.
Reliance on devices is fine until they stop working. I use maps on my iPad for convenience, but I always carry physical maps and a compass. Crazy not to.

And yeah, turn the phone off. I used to work for a bloke who always took his holidays in Hong Kong, where he always stayed at the Sheraton. I said, "why go, there's a Sheraton right here?" . Same principle, if you take the Internet and Foxtel and Netflix etc. with you, why go?

But you'll be glad of a satphone if you break your leg or get bitten by something nasty.
