In Fact the contemporary over reliance on Internet and phone has led to poor service of many kinds outside the cities, because the assumption is that connection is available everywhere.
Thank goodness it still isn't!

Agreed. And not just poor service either. Poor prep as well, as people seem to believe that help is just a 'phone call away even if they're on the moon.
Reliance on devices is fine until they stop working. I use maps on my iPad for convenience, but I always carry physical maps and a compass. Crazy not to.
And yeah, turn the phone off. I used to work for a bloke who always took his holidays in Hong Kong, where he always stayed at the Sheraton. I said, "why go, there's a Sheraton right here?" . Same principle, if you take the Internet and Foxtel and Netflix etc. with you, why go?
But you'll be glad of a satphone if you break your leg or get bitten by something nasty.
