    TJM OX winches

Contemplating a electric winch for my Defender. Know that Warn's are the best (or so everyone says).
But these are a perhaps bit costly for weekend type use. Anyone had anything to do with TJM OX winches. How do these go ?
Also when fitting a winch is it necessary to beef up the front springs to carry the extra weight. If so any recommendations.
Thanks for your help with these queries.

I had a TJM Ox Hydraulic on my Rodeo. I think they are rebadged MileMarker winches. Whatever it is it is still written on the winch somewhere. Although the electric ones are not necessarily the same brand.

I had no trouble with it but it was not used much and it was a 10000lb winch on a Rodeo so not particularly over stressed.

I'd be upgrading the springs. It is a lot of weight to be sitting that far in front of the axle. Especially if you mount it in a steel bar.

Why not look at a second hand Warn?

My Disco came with a Warn M8000 and ARB bar. According to the previous owner he bought the winch and had it checked out/reconditioned for less than a new one at the time (about 4 years ago).

    Worth looking at anyway.

    Winch

I have an Aldi special on my Defender. It is a 9500lb winch, and cost me $500. It was purchased for my Cape York trip, and was not used. It did give me confidence to tackle some areas where I would not go without either back-up, or a winch. As for springs, my front end has dropped since installing the winch, and bar. But for the money involved, I can get Blistines and springs all around, and still be ahead if I had purchased a Warn.
I think Aldi have had a sale $399 for the winch.

    Good luck,

    Ken

I went midway and bought a Terrain Tamer winch. Nowhere near the cost of a Warn, and probably less than double the cheapest eBay ones. No doubt also made in the same Chinese factory, but hopefully to a better standard as TT have a brand and reputation to protect. Fitting it this weekend, so can't comment on whether my choice was a good one yet, but couldn't justify a Warn for probably once a year or so of use, but by the same token, didn't want something that woudl fail the one time I did need it.

Spring wise, every supplier I spoke to suggested going slightly heavier on the front due to me telling them a winch would be going on.

Ox hyd winches are made by Mile Marker. The Mile Marker hyd winches are good quality, their electric winches are not so good and don't have a good name.

There are lots of Warn winches and they are pretty variable - some good, others not so good.

The Warn name was made on the old design highmount, based on an even older (and better made) winch that they bought. As much as they would like to discontinue the highmount it continues to be in demand as their later winches have not proved as good (even given the faults with the highmount).

Other than an Ox hyd winch, all of mine are Warn, but I don't rate my one Warn lowmount that highly - though probably better than some cheap Chinese made examples.

i've had an Ox 10,000lb on my Disco for the past 3 years and whilst it weighs about 50 odd kilos - and sticks out a mile on the Disco/ARB bar - it's copped about ten recoveries and hasn't faulted or overheated. Obviously there are recoveries and RECOVERIES but i rate it. Bought it for $1500 and fitted it myself with a 'blue top' Optima battery.

I had wanted a Warn but couldn't afford it at the time.

PS. most of my recoveries were double line using a rated pulley. My only other experience with winches has been on ex Mil S3 with a PTO - fantastic when the engines running

I really really like one of those electric/hydraulic jobbies but at about $4k....i don't think so

Thanks for your comments Matt. Yes the ox's are a bit heavy. So prob some larger springs. Had a look at Hydraulic ones myself but very expensive and a lot of work putting them in

    Cheers, Radz
