    Happy Days!!!!

Went out this morning and noticed a wet oily spot on the driveway under the front right side of my Disco......(mmm a new oil spot to hit with degreaser!!)

Straight away saw $$$$$ Signs, thinking to myself "bet my bottom dollar its the steering box".... Had a look, level all good, drip of oil on the drop arm...mmm, nope dry up the top, no leaks when started up , degreased and looked again, nope no leaks, mmmmm now thinking oil cooler, engine oil.... half an hour with a torch and scruffling around over an under the disco, and I had a lightbulb moment..... BING!!!!!!!!

Its' full of oil, and lives above where the oil apparently leaking from ..... THE JACK!!!!

    WOO HOO

Pulled the cover and the jack was sitting in 1-2 cm of oil... Good and Bad feelings swept over me....(mostly Good)

Now after reflection......1. Why would a sealed unit under no pressure fill it's nappy to the extent mine did, and
    2. How de hell do I fix the oil seal at the ram section of the bottle jack????

Thats engine oil travelling from the injectors to the ECU.
    VERY COMMON,easy enought to fix.

    Still Happy Days....

    Just checked the ECU and........

I am happy to say despite an AWW FER FORKS SAKE!! moment

Appears all is well, nice and dry where harness plugs in to ECU, the jack is bone dry and not a drop left in it...so I am 99% sure its the jack thats had the jack.... (Thanks LandyAndy!!!)

So do I refill and persist, or re-build (not sure I have the requisite tools and skills) or go on ebay and buy a 2nd hand one???

They are fairly cheap new.. Is it worth rebuilding, might be able to get one with a heavier rating and longer travel (Obviously Aftermarket not genuine!)

you will notice that when you put the jack in in the way that landrover intended that the little rubber plug that holds the oil in, wait for it this is one of those WTF things....

    The little rubber bung is...

on the bottom of the cylinder....

so when the oil cools down it sucks a little air into the plug then when it heats up it forces the oil out.

and where do we put said jack with the rubber plug on the bottom of the cylinder when stored?

In the engine bay, where the engine does a wonderful job of heating the jack up and then letting it cool down again when you shut down.

I did a thread on rebuilding the rover jack. its a piece of cake if you have the right pin wrench to get the top ring nut undone or are willing to butcher it and it only has a bout $15 of seals in it in total.

keep the thing stored vetically in the back of the vehicle somewhere they are less likely to leak and the seals not being constantly heat cycled should also last longer.

    Ta for the tips.

Thanks heaps for the advice, I have re-filled the jack and cycled it thru range of movement and its holding pressure OK so it might not need a rebuild but the jack now lives in the cargo area pockets upright!!!
