    County Central Locking

    Gday All
Following on from the last thread about central locking in fenders who has done it to a county (with lift up type door handles)? I am not so much interested in mounting etc but in how it is activated. When I lock the front door/s with the key the knob on the inside doesnt move down and the door then must be unlocked with the key, vice versa if inside and the knob is pushed down the door is locked but cannot be unlocked with the key (I assume this is normal in a county). As i understand it CL in kits the drivers door has a servo that actuates the rest but in most/all other cars when you lock the door the knob goes down too activating the rest to lock. The only way around this I thought would be to make the drivers side passenger door the master lock (to activate it to lock all doors bar the drivers) as its the easiest to reach, then lock drivers door with key (Not ideal)???? Very interested to hear how others have done it. I dont really want to get an alarm as well to have remote locking, would be too scared if the battery went flat the car is locked with no way in.
Also to push and lift the knobs to lock the doors can be a little stiff how strong are the CL servos I can imagine them struggling to lift/depress the lock mechanism.

    Thanks in advance
    Luke

    Hey Luke.

I hope the 4bd1 went back in ok.

I enquired about this when I had my previous county. As you pointed out the doors have 2 different locking mechanisms.

The front doors can be locked by key which just locks the lift up handle in place. From memory you can still open the door from the inside when the door is key locked.

The locking knobs work similar to a defender, although seem a bit easier to open than defender.

The place I enquired at recommended against fitting central locking as it wasn't secure enough.

    Gday Peter

Yes 4BD1 went back in fine tho it looks like the oil seals/ gaskets I replaced on the gearbox are leaking again (not happy Jan) at least its a bit slower now.
What do you mean not secure enough? and on mine if lock with key I definitely cannot open the door without unlocking with key first.

    Cheers

Unfortunately can't help ya much as mine had one of the cheap sets from JB hifi in it which the PO ripped out - but I've got defender doors, not 'series-style' lift up door locks...

They thought it was not secure enough with just using the actuators and not the key.

JDNSW has installed central locking on his County, don't know if he has lift up doors or not.

Yes, I have done this. To operate it I installed a microswitch on the back of the lock, operated by the turning of the key (driver's door only). This locks the system, and when you unlock with the key it lifts the plunger and attached actuator enough to unlock everything else, provided the adjustment is just right. In practice this adjustment is very hard to achieve, and most of the time the other doors do not unlock until I actually open the driver's door. If I were doing it again I would get a system set up for remote keyless entry (I balked at the extra cost fifteen years ago!), and the key mechanism would simply not be used, although could still be used to unlock the same as with the original system - you can unlock a front door even if it was not locked using the key, simply by locking and unlocking it.

    Hope this helps

This is what I plan to do. Just bought a central locking AND keyless entry kit from Jaycar. I will post a writeup/pics when I install it.

May be worth noting that I have successfully added central locking to the back door. This uses a lever on a pivot on the lock, with a slot engaging the locking knob and is cranked to come alongside the lock from where an operating rod goes under the trim to the actuator.
