Oh come on blokes, a skinny vs Fats thread is gunna do exactlly what a Jap V Rover debate is going to do!
4 fifths of FA!
If you want a definitive answer, borrow a set of Skinny tyres, and GO FOR A DRIVE, then bolt a set of fatties on, and GO FOR A DRIVE.... and then post your OPINION up here - cos a forum is a place of opinion, like it or not.... especially with issues like this.
Peace!
OK, so im a complete novice, and reading through this is getting confusing. What I see is a pattern, where depending on the type of driving you do (off road), would determine the tyre width/treat pattern/tyre pressure/rubber compound etc.
So maybe for someone like me, it would be better if people put their experiences in the following categories (as Slunnie has):
Bitumen:
Mud:
Sand:
Rock:
Now seeing as were not going change tyres mid way through terrain between skinny and fat, am I right in saying that whatever terrain is available in most ubandance, then choose tyre to suit?
Good thread tho, I do appreciate the read even tho I cannot contribute as I really have very little 4x4 experience (which will CHANGE SOON!!)
Carlos
As stated a couple of times, Im just interested in what people have and what they think about their own tyres.
If you guys would like more information, do a search or start a thread, how hard is that instead of hyjacking someone elses thread.
Im not interested what PhillipA thinks about the availability of Comp tyres as that wasnt the question I asked, Im not interested in the pros and cons of wide over narrow tyres, maybe I named the thread the wrong name but I wanted to know what people were running and what they thought, not what they thought of everyone elses tyres.
So stooge, regardless of how much 4wding experience you have, the answer to the question would have been the vehical you have plus the tyre type size and what you like or dislike about them.
Ive had both Wide and Narrow and everything in between and I can say for certain that they both have their advantages and disadvantages over eachother but thats not why I asked.
Thanks everyone for posting, most people posted the info I was asking for so Im happy with that, hopefully this thread will just die a natural death from hear on in.
I am sorry I gave an opinion, but after 5 pages had forgotten the exact wording of your post.
I run 245.75x16 BFG AT KO, and also a set of 205.80x16 BFG Long trails, three of which are now on my camper.
I find the Long Trails great on highwayas they have an assymetric tread with closed shoulders( which gives very accurate steering on corners), and the AT KOs better off road.Less steering kickback and tram lining with Long Trails.
Regards Philip A
I didnt even think of that Phillp as I normally read the first few posts first to get what the thread is about and then unless something jumps out at me I skim the rest until the last but not everyone does that so............
Bump....
Narrow tyres V Wide tyres
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a fair bit of controversy with this topic so I will make it a simple question.
What do you run Narrow or wide and why.
Just to keep it nice, I think it may be better if we didnt comment on what others have in this thread just your own thoughts on your vehical.
I run 235 86 16 BFG AT KO's on my D1 and I find that in mud they tent to dig fairly well and are good on rock as well as clay etc.
I havnt had them in sand and normally off road I run them on about 20PSI.
Whislt I agree that at times a thread may go off slightly from its original posted question, this is the nature of conversation. Throughout this thread there has been many posts that were of interest to me personally, so however you see the posts not relating to the question you asked, may I suggest that you leave the Nazi attitude away from the keyboard and have a little more 'flexibility' in your approach. Some of your responses have been a little harsh, maybe you should re-read your posts as well....
Cheers,
It is not just myself that gets sick of people hyjacking threads in the tech section for nothing other than to start an opinion bashing from one to another member.
THat is why I put in a guideline of just responding with your own tyres and thoughts of them and not to sway from that so it didnt end up like this.
If you see that as being Nazi like then I suppose my Jewish family and freinds as well as my employers would be very disapointed in me.
If you want the nature of conversation then the general chat section is for you but if you want to follow the nature of a thread in the tech section the your more than welcome to.
There has been a few very colourful rants about hyjacking threads especially in the tech section of late and I suppose this has become mine.
It was posted clearly at the start of the thread, repeated a various times throughout the thread and then I have bumped the original post so that everyone could see it again why I wanted to keep this thread on track but now I wish I hadnt started it.
If a question is asked then if you post in that thread then post an answer to the question as one day you will be searching for some information and having to wade through 500 pages of irrelevant drivel that has no relevence to the question or the subject that the thread was originally intended and you will hopefully then think back to your post in here and realise what I was going on about.
Hey McRover, you've done a pretty good job of hijacking your own thread
I dont think fat or skinny are worth a pinch, unless they're 35"s tall![]()
i've been watching this thread with interest and even posted my opinions. whilst i appreciate what your saying mcrover, it is nice to know the facts as opposed to what someone is running and what they think of them which isn't really that technical.
the thread is titled skinny v's wide or something similar so why not let people post what they want with regard to the title and when all is done then others can read through and make there mind up. this thread should have been a good one with reference the best tyres for certain terrains and has now turned into someone throwing their toys out of the pram because it didn't go the way they wanted it to.
