    Td5 Fuel Problem

I was heading back home today thru Kangeroo Valley; coming up the mountain just 7klm short of Fitzroy Falls the engine coughs and dies. Luckily I was along side a stopping area, pulled over.I tried to restart but no joy, then after turning off completely it restarted but we only went 200m and it coughed and died again.Same starting problems again, went another 200m twice, finally found a large area to pull over.
I lifted the bonnet and and couldn't see or smell anything. The engine wasn't hot, I had been watching the temp guage; also on long climbs I never have the A/C on. It would run at idle, but not under load. I drained the fuel filter carefully suspecting air (I once had a stick hit the sediment sensor causing it leak with almost identical symptoms) I primed the fuel filter then started the engine it ran at 3000 rpm ok for short time then spluttered again. We finally rang the NRMA as there was too much traffic to risk further 200m bursts. The NRMA bloke from Kangeroo Valley arrived 25 mins later, he went over the problems and what I did, he then started the car and held the revs around 3000 rpm for 2-3 mins no problem. So he suggested we try for the top of the mountain and he would follow us for safety; the bloody thing now goes over the mountain no problem. This NRMA guy was great the only thing we could think of was fuel filter problem or one of the other sensors was playing up. Has any one got any ideas ? also I'm thinking of bagging the sediment sensor and replacing the fuel filter with a Fleetguard fuel filter without a tap as this seems to be my second problem with the fuel filter set-up.

The water sensor only causes the warning lamp to turn on. But if you want to do away with the sensor, just replace it with a bolt as is std on the last of the D2s.
Whilst waiting for the NRMA, did you happen to remove the fuel cap? Also, perhaps the filter needs renewing.

I did open the fuel cap but I didn't detect any pressure problems.

I can think of a few other things first.

as the entire fuel system outside of the tank on a td5 is pressurised any problems usually turn up as leaks not sucking air, which makes fault finding really easy.

you dont need to have full pressure on the fuel system to get it to run but you do if you want reliable full power. With that in mind Id suggest

    1. you might have a pump thats having the decency of letting you know its failing before it totally fails, (how much fuel did you have in the tank?)

    2. It might just be a bad connector to the fuel pump OR a bad earth

    3. Ditto for the fuel pump control relay.

I'd just filled up about 70 klm before hand, and after it restarted I travelled another 180klm without a problem. Ilooked for leaks and couldn't see any. I put conditioner in every refill so I think dirt etc is not the problem The fuel pump relay is a thought, maybe when it cooled it started working again properly.

Have you changed the fuel filter lately??

The reason i ask is that i had a similar problem and it turned out to be, i had left the top O-ring from the old filter in the filter housing, so it basicly had 2 O-rings in the top once i put the new filter in, which created a gap

After replaceing fuel filter as a precautionary measure, it ran fine for weeks and then the problems started again. I have replaced MAF sensor
as the old was was not working by Graeme Cooper in Sydney last week. He said the MAF wasn't the only problem according to my details, but nothing else was showing an error code. It ran well for about 25k then ran rough I restarted it and it never missed a beat for 5 days. Then the hot days come along and the problems start again. It seems to be triggered by using the A/C !! I have checked the wires from the MAF to the ECU and replaced the cable covering, but couldn't see anything. I can't get a booking till next Wednesday for error codes etc.
    Crank angle sensor ??

    Thanks again in advance.

    Laurie,

Its sounding suspiciously like the fuel pump might be on its way out, as mentioned above. How many kms has the vehicle done? It seems that they often get tired by around 200k, and sometimes a fair bit less kms.

Graeme It's just turned over 120k this week, I listen for the fuel pump and every time I restart when it's stopped I can hear it; unless it's cutting out and then restarts when the ignition is restarted.

I have had fuel pump failures in these at way less K's, try 96,000km!!

Definately sounds like fuel pump though, The last one I cut open, the brush holders on the motor had melted and dropped off, they were PLASTIC!!!!

    It had done about 130,000km.
