County V8 Manual to Auto Conversion

    Guys,
Has anyone converted a County V8 to a Auto from a Manual?
If so do you have any advice on the best way around it..
Plan is to get a rolled or smashed Disco V8 auto and use the drive line from it...

    Anyone?
    Anyone?

There was someone on OL that had a TF727 in a county that was used for offroad racing, the only problems i can think of would be modifying the trans tunnel for the shifter and if it had a LT95 originally then when you fit the lt230 and zf the f/r tailshafts might not be the right length, mix and matching parts should sort it though.

teach her to drive its easier.......

    but that said.....

the ZF with a 230 on a 3.9 V8 should just about drop in in place of the lt85/95 but you'll need to change propshafts and the tunnel will need changing to accomodate the shifter.

    rework the park brake setup

mod the center gearbox cross member

then you'll need to do the radiator and plumb up the cooler...

    pull the clutch out

borrow one of the wifes dresses

just teach her to drive... IF i can teach SWMBO to handle a IIA im sure she can learn a syncro box.

    With a Gen3

Cable shifter, so that'll be easy peasy, only the H-L and difflock lever that's a concern, dont know if they're a different configuration to the disco/RR ones??

Unless you buy an LT85 county of course, then the LT230 is already their

An auto County would be great. Go for it.

... or use an external cooler like my '86 Rangie auto had and the P38A also has.

The handbrake isn't an issue if you use the Disco or RR park brake. It's not an uncommon mod to use the cable-operated handbrake from a Freelander or RR - and it gets rid of the oft-complained about County/Defender handbrake.

Fortunately, you're pretty good with the metalwork, Steve, so doing a new tunnel shouldn't be a problem.

Metal work is the easy part.....
Tail shafts are not bad, worse case, i'll get new ones made... $200 each...

If its using the 230 as std the Handbrake should be fine... the Tranny length is the hard part i guess as the LT230 will have to be moved back..
