I was going to suggest you try cleaning it first before forking out the money for a new one.

Buy a can of carby or electrical contact cleaner and give the element and the plug a spray and allow it to dry, put it back on and see how it goes.

These cleaners dry quickly and don't leave a residue

If the MAF does not fix your slugishness and higher fuel use, check to make sure that the EGR valve is fully closed with the engine off and not sitting a bit open.

For the ECU to use default settings with the MAF it would be open circuit. If open circuit it will be sluggish off the line but when you floor it the thing will hesitate then go like a rocket ship.

Crook MAF will tend to make it surge (feel like it is missing) at about 3200 rpm.

Also check your turbo wastegate is not stuck open slightly, losing boost. I run mine adjusted fully closed while the engine is switched off with no bad effects at all.

Have a great trip back to Alice.

What and where is the EGR valve. My disco has the problem of slugish of the mark and then takes off. I cleaned MAF with CO2 contact cleaner as well as replacing the waste gate when i had the surging problem
and it worked a treat Ialso cleaned a small amount of oil from the computer contacts.

    I just ordered one from

    http://www.roverparts.com.au/

$280 and they shipped it overnight express. I had it the next day.

The EGR valve is the unit the the hose from the intercooler connects to on the air inlet side of your motor. Removing the black acoustic cover from the top of the engine will expose it.

If you follow the exhaust tube from the end of your exhaust manifold arounf the front of the motor it will also lead you to it. If it is a MY2003 or 2004 you will have a heat exchanger in the exhaust line as well.

The ECU via the EGR controls the feed of exhaust gas into the air inlet (yuck..for reburning the exhaust gas) to control emissions. If it is stuck open a bit it will cause the TD5 problems.

Get an EGR removal kit and get rid of it. As you said also a faulty wastegate modulator will also make the TD5 surge as found out.

Just because the contacts look clean does not mean that the ECU is getting the right signals from the MAF. The siemens unit is junk and does not like heat.

Catch-22, $280 is a good price. Mine cost me $350 plus freight out of Perth. Perth Dealer wanted $380 plus freight. I wish I found roverparts before I ordered mine.

Forgot..Also sluggish off the mark can be turbo boost. Make sure that there are no air pressure leaks (i.e inside of turbo pressure hoses not falling apart, no holes or tears in the hoses, no loose hose clamps, intercooler does not have deisel oil in it from useless EGR valve) and adjust the wastegate fully closed with the motor turned off.

That's where I run mine..max possible boost and no problems what soever.

If all is working as it should, the ECU via the wastegate control units will control what pressure is at the inlet side.

Oil in the Harness, suspension knock, transmission clunk, engine oil leaks, exhaust manifold leaks, centrifugal oil filter stripped bolts, a/c leaks, door leaks, wouldn't trade it for the world

Thanx for the heads up on Rover parts, will look em up next time. The new MAF sensor made a little difference, not as much as i'd expect but hopefully fuel consumpion will be back to normal now. Mine can't be the egr valve as i threw that away a while ago and got a kit from discowhite. my hoses would be getting a bit older now but they seem alright might be time for some silicon ones though.
