Last 24 hours has seen my battery warning light in the Defender stay on, very dim, when driving. I'm getting 14.1V to the battery but looks like only 12 - 13V on the brown-yellow lead out of the alternator (that feeds to the instruments). I suspect this means the Alternator's on the way out.
Can anyone confirm or advise on this?
Also what's the best option for a replacment? I seem to recall you can swap the 65Amp Defender with a 100Amp Disco one.
Who's a good source for one? (Mail order, so not worth exchanging it unless freight is cheap)

Thanks Tim,
I've check all the connections at the alternator and they are clean but I'm yet to check the starter earth and trace the alternator wires back. I read some where this could also be a diode issue. I think the diode in question is built into the alternator. Too bloody hot to work on anything for very long this afternoon and its still about 34C and very humid so I'll leave it until tomorrow.
Cheers
Derek

Well it definitelty looks like the Alternator, so off to call roverparts tomorrow and order a new one.
Anything better than an orginal worth considering?
How much is a Bosch and who supplies these?

New O.E. one fitted - 14.5V on the meter across the battery terminals.
Kind of looks out of place being the only clean shiny thing in the engine bay. That won't last long![]()

did it set you back lots of $$$?
Can't an Auto-electrician fix it.
I had a new regulator and bearings in mine just this week for $150.00
I swapped a spare one in and now I have a rebuilt one sitting on the shelf as a spare.
No only $300. Now compare that to a mate's Nissan 4.8L Patrol which lost its alternator last week, 110Amp unit, told he can only get genuine O.E. for...
$1800- suffice to say he's looking for a cheaper alternative.
I'm going to look at getting the old unit fixed, but at present I'd have to freight it to Darwin, it's Christmas and I need something reliable.

When you say O.E.M. did you go down the 110amp Disco path or stick with 65 Defender version?
